Hello,

As a child, Valentine’s Day meant a great deal to me. I remember going through the packs of assorted Valentines, and using the list of names provided by the teacher to ensure everyone received one. One Valentine’s Day stands out for me.

When I was four years old, my mom dropped me off at preschool. Shortly after entering the school gate, I realized that I had forgotten my Valentines. I ran out of the gate to catch my mom, but she had already pulled away. I didn’t know how to get home; I just knew the general direction. I walked for over three quarters of a mile, crossing a four-lane highway.

A man pulled up in his car and asked me what I was doing. I told him calmly, “I forgot my Valentine’s cards at home.”  He offered me a ride home; I got in. I was young enough not to know how to get home. We drove around for I don’t know how long. It could have been 15 or 20 minutes; I really don’t remember. It was only when we passed a landmark I recognized, Johnson Funeral Home, that I knew we were close.

I made it home.  Mom didn’t yell at me, or get upset.  I think she was just happy I made it home.  I wish I could thank this man who brought me home safely on Valentine’s Day.
