Microsoft Starter 2010 works with a virtualization technology like V-App. It does not really install Office on your computer, but a virtualized office (like Office in a virtual machine).
To do this it creates a drive Q: which is not user accessable . If you are using drive Q: already, Office 2010 Starter won't work.
Office 2010 Starter could be installed using a setup (SetupConsumerC2ROLW.exe) which downloaded the installation files from internet.
Sometime around 2012, Microsoft pulled the plug, so the installation files couldn't be downloaded anymore.
i tried to follow your steps, all of them worked perfectly except the last one. when trying to reinstall office from the program_data folder i got an error in the end, i think it was step 4 or 5 of the installation process. it said that i would need to run it again but the same error appeared. i used system restore to get back to the initial state, meaning click2run configuration problem

WOW! that worked. Thanks so much mate. I have been without office for almost a year, and during Uni, its really shit having to use 3rd party word processing programs. This site -microsoft_office_starter is where I re-downloaded the MS office trial.
Hi Steve, I followed all of your instructions all the way through step 4. I got stopped at step 5 because I could not locate the SetupConsumerC2ROLW.exe file from my download. I also checked my program list for Microsoft, and office starter has been completely removed.
Steve, I am stuck with Office Starter not loading like the gentleman abovementioned. I tried installing the patch from your link but it said no file found needed for the patch. Please help, I am vedyfrustrated. Do you suggest I just download one of the free office suits like libreoffice?
So fortunate that you were able to grab a copy of that utility before Microsoft deleted it. I cannot help but wonder if MS deliberately broke the starter edition in hopes of coercing users into buying a paid version.
I got message that Q:\ is not accessible. I could not find anywhere. May be that is causing this problem. I deleted everything and downloaded version from the internet of office starter and followed your instructions. But the same message. Do not know how to fix it.
based on another set of directions, see below (that seemed to work for everyone who already had plain ms office 2010 in their start menu programs) i removed my office starter in ANTICIPATION of using the ms office icon to reinstall starter per the directions.

I know this thread is older, but just in case. I am currently working for a smaller privately owned company. The company actually does not use microsoft office 10, they are using 2007. But this error pops up every time I try to open a word file, mind you, it is only word. Not excel, or powerpoint. It looks as if they may have installed a starter on the 10 but I am not sure.
As a matter of fact, there is no longer any folder named office on my computer. C:\ProgramData\Microsoft has no such folder in it using admin privs now.
It was there before I ran the cleaner but not now.
Just found out that Office 2010 Starter installs on WIndows 10 is still working after some installing some extra updates.
However I would like to download the install files, but I can not get the script to do so.

But clicking on the click-2-run application file only puts it on the installed prgrams list i cant find the programs on the start menu help please!!!

Great find! Even though I use another commercial office suite, nothing beats having a copy of the market leading MS Office as backup. I have used Office 2010 Starter and find it as good as the premium versions, barely noticing the limitations or even the sidebar (with MS ads).
I used the starter version for a year with no problem and then all of a sudden when I saved a document the folder icon became a gold color and I could no longer open, just get a sign saying I need to purchase the program. Any clues why this would happen, thought I could use the starter version forever. My OS is Windows 7
With collaboration edition, this informations is the fondation of versionning. I don't know if MS Office 2013 easly delet it or not. Like any other free software, Microsoft Office Starter Edition 2010 has its own limitations compared to the full edition software. The primary advantage of the starter edition is, it is free and there is no time limit. You can continue using the product as long as you wish. There is no expiry date for the Starter version.

Main limitations of Office Starter 2010
The primary limitation of this Microsoft Office suite is, it includes only 2 products:
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft Excel
This limitation alone tells a lot. You cannot use any of the other Office products like Outlook, Powerpoint etc. If you like to manage your emails, you will have to look for some other email software since Outlook is not included in the Office Starter 2010. Also, you will have to find another solution for making presentations since Powerpoint is not part of the suite.
Other popular software like Microsoft OneNote, Microsoft Project etc are also not part of the Office Starter. This means you will have to depend on some other tools to manage your projects and create notes. Luckily, there are several other free software available to manage Notes. However, I am not sure if there are any other better solution for Microsoft users to manage their Projects.
Even though MS Word and Excel are included in the Office Starter 2010, they themselves come with some limitations. Some of the limitations include:
- You cannot comments in your documents. If you collaborate with others and manage documentation, you will feel the lack of ability to add comments very disturbing
- There is no change tracker. This important in corporate atmosphere where some people create documents and then it goes through editing by many others. If you like to track who changed what, then you will have to upgrade to full version of Microsoft Office 2010
Do you use Excel more than just a spreadsheet? Many people still use Excel as a database. One of the limitations of the Excel version included in the Office Starter is, you cannot connect to external datasources from your Starter Excel.
If you are a customization guy who always tune the software according to your choice, you will the toolbar customization option missing in the Starter edition.
Some other missing features include capability to analyze data with pivot tables, adding SmartArt graphics to your documents, use programmable macros to automate certain task etc.
Other limitations include missing table of contents, footnotes, and bibliographies for your reports.
Add-Ins for Office Starter 2010
Microsoft Office is a great platform which allow you to extend the software by installing Add-Ins. The Starter version does not allow installing Add-ins.
Security: Office Starter edition does not allow you to turn on or off document protection.
