Prime Minister Modi went to USA under trying circumstances. Adani , NSA vs Pannu affair , Illegal immigrants and trade deficit were very complex issues which could have tripped even experienced diplomats . Indian Foreign minister Jaishankar’s abnormally long US stay prior to PM’s visit drew criticism in India and in China even . Colombia’s rejection of refugee plane and Brazil’s criticism of crass neglect of human dignity by chaining immigrants in contrast to measured response of India looked like humiliating surrender .
Some give and take was inevitable . But in the end we gave so little but got Adani and NSA off hook, got Mumbai accused Rana , F – 35 , promised investment in IMEC Corridor .The cake was Trump’s handing over Bangladesh to India . It will not prevent China from trying mischief with Yunus but India will be able to weave a democratic movement with both Sheikh Hasina and Begum Khalida Zia’s support . It will not solve all the problems but will minimise them .
