Great article Patrick. It is a rare to see ideas put forth so bluntly
and plainly. I strongly agree with your point that due to the
complacency of our society, poorly written and unorganized material
are able to achieve such heights of acclaim and authority.

What are your thoughts though as to the cause of this unfortunate
status quo?

Thanks Tim! I think I read one too many of those "Science in society"
papers that was assigned to me, and was forced to publicly release my
rant about them.

As to the cause, there's a number of reasons, but I think the one at
the root of everything is that most people don't understand the
majority of things in their life. Society got complicated (as it had
to).

There are rules and regulations and morals which (for the most part)
have solid reasoning behind them, except that few people actually know
what that reasoning is. So the consequence of this is that people are
accustomed to not *truly* understanding something. But the danger of
this is, once you accept this as the norm, you give up your ability
(and your will) to judge and think objectively.

Thus a lot of academic writing (especially in those fields that have
little objective measurements) is written by and written for people
that are content with not fully understanding something.

So once it became impossible to judge writing for its logical content,
then how do you judge it? Well you judge it for its advanced
vocabulary, for its intricate sentence structure, etc... It's no
wonder that this sort of writing became unreadable very quickly.
