Hey all!  Since it seems like the vast majority of Roll20 players (myself included) use portraits for their tokens, I thought I might start a thread on good resources for creating said portraits.

I've been using the Fantasy Avatar Creator, but more often than not, the results are kind of ugly.  http://www.ageofgames.net/en/fantasyavatar/fantasy-avatar.html

Last night I was poking around and I found Hero Machine, which is intended primarily for superhero portraits, I think--the results are kind of cartoony, which is good for some of my characters, but not for others.  It does make a good Nagaji, though, which is hard to come by.  http://www.heromachine.com/heromachine-2-5-character-portrait-creator/

Sam also found the Ascension Couple Creator, which is intended to make two avatars together, but you can do one at a time and thus it's useful.  It's super-anime--the dudes are yaoi and a half--but for at least three of my characters, that almost makes sense, so I've been fiddling with this, too.  http://www.rinmarugames.com/game/?game_id=392

What's your favorite?

Like Jacob said, I use either GIS or draw/ink them myself, and then use TokenTool for my own.  For making tokens from players portraits that they send me I just use TokenTool, and generally try to fit what I feel most appropriately displays the character idea within the token.  I usually use square token frames for obvious reasons, but TokenTool also provides circular token frames, too, so sometimes that works better.

I use google images and GIMP for tokens. I like to add an alpha channel, delete all background, and save as png. Then again, I prefer full body to portrait tokens.

Like Kim & Jacob, I use Tokentool, either with art found on the net, or by extracting images from either the scenario/module/AP or the bestiaries.

I use images grabbed from Google searches, and from the Wizard's web site for their painted mini sets.

Turns out Pathfinder/D&D isn't the only game that commissions a lot of fantasy art.

I use Google search for images, which can be frustrating at times. One character does indeed have a picture from HeroMachine. But all of mine I like to give a custom frame in GIMP and make sure it's a square image. I kind of long ago stopped "fixing" my players' pictures to be squares in a frame. If they want a scale image, they can find or fix one. For me, though, all but two of my own pictures have a border. Oh, wait, three. Forgot to count my owl. But everyone else! Square. Border. Ready to go.
