>Experts warn bird flu virus changing rapidly in largest ever outbreak
>Since first emerging in 1996, the H5N1 avian influenza virus had previously been confined to mostly seasonal outbreaks.
>But "something happened" in mid-2021 that made the group of viruses much more infectious, according to Richard Webby, the head of a World Health Organization collaborating centre studying influenza in animals.
>Webby said that what "scares us the most" are indications from a Spanish mink farm, or among sea lions off South America, that the virus could be transmitting between mammals.

>A COVID-like virus recently leaped from animals to humans—and ‘we can expect more spillover,’ scientists say. Will ‘Langya’ cause the next pandemic?
>As with COVID initially, the virus causes fever and severe respiratory symptoms, and can lead to fatal pneumonia. Also like COVID, it was first identified among humans in China—last year, when it infected 35 farmers and other residents, likely due to contact with shews.
>It wasn’t the first time a Henipavirus—the family Langya belongs to—has jumped to people, and it won’t be the last, researchers warn.
>Henipaviruses are the most lethal of paramyxoviruses, killing around 70% of those who contract them.

>Alarming Discovery: Mutating Bird Flu in China Raises Pandemic Fears
>Researchers from China and Nottingham have identified mutational changes occurring in a subtype of avian flu virus endemic in poultry farms in China. These alterations could increase the likelihood of transmission to humans.
>“We demonstrate that an avian H3N8 virus isolated from a patient with severe pneumonia replicated efficiently in human bronchial and lung epithelial cells was extremely harmful in its effects in laboratory mammalian hosts and could be passed on through respiratory droplets,” says Professor Kin-Chow Chang, at the University of Nottingham.
>“Acid resistance of influenza virus is also an important barrier for avian influenza virus to overcome to acquire the adaptability and transmissibility in new mammals or humans. The current novel H3N8 virus has not acquired the acid resistance yet. So, we should pay attention to the change on acid resistance of the novel H3N8 virus.”

>NIAID-funded researchers working in Peru have signaled concern about the deaths of birds and marine mammals from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) that has been spreading globally...
>“These viruses are rapidly accruing mutations, including mutations of concern, that warrant further examination and highlight an urgent need for active local surveillance to manage outbreaks and limit spillover into other species, including humans,” the researchers say.
>They singled out one mutation to monitor: “… we are particularly concerned by the presence of PB2 D701N in 2 sea lion samples, and in a human case reported in Chile, as this mutation has been specifically linked to mammalian host adaptation and enhanced transmission.”

>Expect the attack to occur in a number of crowded places in colder climates such as New York City or Denver at a bus station, airport and/or stadium.

>The potential of a “super” plague attack is high. Should an attack occur, the US government has ample room for improvement in its ability to respond. In the meantime, it is essential that the people of the US become informed about the possibility of an attack, how to recognize signs that such an attack has occurred, and about what to do if one should occur.

>During the mid to late 1980’s, Russian scientists at Biopreparat made a major breakthrough.... Russian scientists were experimenting with the idea of taking Y. pestis [plague] and inserting various other known toxins into the cells. One day, the announcement was made at Biopreparat that such a design had been successfully made. They inserted a plasmid containing the gene for myelin toxin into Y. pestis . The design was simple and disturbing. If a patient were diagnosed with pneumonic plague in time to be treated, the antibiotics would attack and lyse the plague cells, thereby releasing the plasmid coding for myelin toxin which would cause paralysis, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, and changes in behavior. Heralded as a major triumph for Mother Russia, Alibek explained, “A toxin-plague weapon was never produced before the Soviet Union collapsed, but the success of this experiment set the stage for further research on bacteria-toxin combinations.” (Alibek 1999).

>New, highly mutated COVID variants ‘Pirola’ BA.2.86 and JN.1 may cause more severe disease, new studies suggest
>BA.2.86 can fuse to human cells more efficiently and infect cells that line the lower lung—traits that may make it more similar to initial, pre-Omicron strains that were more deadly.
>Another, perhaps larger concern of Liu: the possibility that COVID recombines with another, more deadly coronavirus like SARS or MERS, which had case fatality rates around 10% and 34%, respectively. In contrast, COVID’s case fatality rate, among unvaccinated Americans, sat around 1% prior to Omicron, and around 0.11% after.

>Africa's public health agency is set to declare an mpox emergency as early as next week, saying the viral infection's rate of spread is alarming, as a new variant moves across Democratic Republic of Congo's borders.
>To the east of Congo, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya, which were previously unaffected by mpox, have all reported cases of the new variant since mid-July, a WHO statement said.
>The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a second health alert on Wednesday to notify clinicians and health departments about the deadly new strain.
>WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has promised to convene an emergency committee to discuss whether the outbreak in Congo represents a public health emergency of international concern.

>A large outbreak of Marburg virus in Rwanda is drawing international concern about the possibility of spread beyond the country’s borders.
>The number of cases detected so far, 27, already makes the outbreak one of the biggest involving Marburg on record. Nine of those individuals have died. There are currently no licensed vaccines to combat the disease.
>Most of the cases detected to date — over 70% — have been in health professionals who work in two hospitals in the capital city, Kigali, which is home to 1.7 million people. Kigali is also a regional and international travel hub; flights from the city go to destinations in about 20 countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
>In a statement issued late Monday, the World Health Organization categorized the risk of spread to neighboring countries as high. It also suggested there is a risk of spread beyond East Africa.
>In fact, one contact of a suspected case — the person currently thought to be the first case, or index case, in this outbreak — did travel to another country, the WHO said. Its statement did not identify the country, but a slide mapping what is known about the chains of transmission that was posted on the social media site X named it as Belgium....
>The outbreak comes at a time when several of Rwanda’s neighbors are battling outbreaks of mpox. Spencer, who has also worked in Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, said should the virus spread into those countries, control of this outbreak would become considerably more challenging.
