Cities have no way to feed themselves when supply lines fail due to, for example, pandemic bird flu with a 60% fatality rate; or a cyberattack or EMP that cripples the nation's electrical grid. Then millions of starving people will do practically anything for a bite to eat. Hostile hackers could also weaponize computers, televisions, cell phones, and cell towers.
Therefore survival requires sufficient distance from primary targets (cities) and isolation from the madding, chomping crowd.
