Subject: NorthJersey.com article on GYSC quoting AmeriCorps & Indy residents.
I missed this article which came out on May 3rd. It’s a nice piece that features our AmeriCorps and Indy residents nicely. We will save this in our News Clips file should anyone need it for down the road. Thanks.
200 youth service volunteers plant trees in Paterson - NorthJersey.com | NorthJersey.com |
PATERSON – Over the years, the areas around the highway ramps leading to and from downtown Paterson have been less than inviting locations. Litter accumulates in the grass. Homeless people build makeshift shelters amid the shrubs. Panhandlers loom near the cross streets.
But recently there was cause for celebration at the Route 19 ramp near Spruce Street. A group of volunteers celebrating Global Youth Service Day had planted a tree. Everyone applauded.
“It’s about caring for our own city,’’ said Tasina Muttakim of Paterson, a member of the New Jersey Community Development Corporation’s AmeriCorps program, who participated in the planting.
“If we don’t care, who else is going to care?’’ said Muttakim, a college student. “That’s why I joined AmeriCorps because if I don’t help my neighbor who’s going to help them? Today we are planting trees. We’re cleaning up the street but someone has to do it every time.’’
A contingent of more than 200 volunteers, including the AmeriCorps members, spent last Saturday working on beautification efforts at several different neighborhoods, including the areas the Community Charter School on Mill Street, School 5 on Totowa Avenue, and John F. Kennedy High School on Preakness Avenue.
Karribe Wynne was another of the volunteers. Wynne lives at “The Independence House,” a NJCDC program that provides transition housing for young men between the ages of 17 and 21 who have had to leave the foster care system with no place to go. They live at Independence House for up to 2 years where they develop independent living skills to help them successfully transition into adulthood.
Wynee said he thought it was a good idea to plant trees in Paterson. “I had fun doing it” said Wynne.
Global Youth Service Day is celebrated every year in more than 100 countries, with young people working together with schools, youth organizations, nonprofits, community and faith-based organizations, national service programs, government agencies, and adult mentors.
Among the other programs represented at the Global Youth Service Day in Paterson were The Paterson Youth Council, the Great Falls teen center, the Great Falls Youth Build Program, the Kennedy high Environmental Club, and students from Paterson School 5.
