All:

I was thinking of renting one of the clubs cabin's, Little Cove or
Silberman Trail Center in southern Pennsylvania, for a weekend in late
March or early April to host a Tuscarora Trail Survey-A-Thon. With
some smart shuttling we could probably cover 30+ miles of Tuscarora
and side Trails over a weekend. Idea would be to rent the cabin Friday
and Saturday night, survey Saturday and Sunday.

If you would be interested let me know, if enough parties our
interested I will work on fixing a date and renting a cabin.

Sounds like a good idea to me, too. Although things can come up that
make a given weekend impossible to attend, I would likely participate.

A fair number of people have expressed interest in the outing so I am
going to look for cabin availability. I am thinking of the weekends of
March 18th - 20th or April 1st - April 3rd.

The target area for the trip will be the Tuscarora Trail and misc side
trails on PATC Map K.

I will update everyone when I have a cabin, if a certain weekend
sounds good to you please feel free to email me.

All:

I have reserved one of PATC's newest cabins, Little Cove, for the
weekend of March 18th - 20th. Little Cove is a modern cabin so we
won't exactly be roughing it. The cabin is surrounded by Pennsylvania
State Game Lands and is very near the TT.

Let me know if you can make it so I can plan for supplies. If you
can't make it for the weekend feel free to come up for a day. I
appreciate everyone's interest in the outing.

I won't be making a weekend of it but should be able to make it out for Saturday.

My business trip for the March 19/20 weekend was canceled (thank you,
potential Furlough), so there is a good chance I can attend the Little
Cove GPS weekend. Please let me know if there will be room in the
cabin on Friday &/or Saturday nights.

Thanks,
Jim Tomlin

Jim:

Plenty of room at the inn Friday and Saturday night. I will be
there Friday. Looking forward to seeing everyone. I will update the
website and this post with directions soon.

For those who to attend the trip next weekend I have updated the
calendar on the website (www.patc-maps.net) with the directions to the
cabin but I will also post them here.

Little Cove Driving Directions (82 Miles from the Washington D.C.
Beltway):

From the Capital Beltway (I-495), take I-270 north to I-70, then I-70
west to I-81 into Pennsylvania to Exit 2 (US Rt. 11 just south of
Greencastle, PA). Follow US Rt. 11 north to second red light, PA Rt.
16, turn left toward Mercersburg, PA. Follow PA Rt. 16 west through
Mercersburg, then through Cove Gap and up the mountain (14 miles from
Greencastle; 5 miles from Mercersburg) to PA Rt. 456 (Little Cove
Road). (This Intersection is on a broad right-hand curve of Rt. 16
with Rt. 456 turning left.) After the left hand turn proceed down
grade on PA Rt. 456 for 1.4-miles to the entrance on the right. Just a
few yards inside the entrance cable is a large parking area that may
be used, or proceed upgrade ½ mile to the cabin for parking. Note: The
access road rises steeply from the valley floor and is cut by water
bars, but, none are deeper than the very first one, which is
immediately after this parking area. It is recommended that those with
lower clearance vehicles take a look before proceeding. If driving to
cabin parking is right beside the cabin.

Note about the water bars, I have driven up to the cabin in my Honda
Civic and have scraped the bottom of my car. If you go very slow over
the water bars you can avoid scraping the bottom of your car. If you
choose to park at the bottom it is a short hike up the road to the
cabin.

Cabin Address: 4975 Little Cove Road, Mercersburg, Pennsylvania,
17236.
Road Entrance coordinates are N 39 50.905’, W077 58.011’

I plan to be up at the cabin between 3pm and 4pm on Friday.

My cell phone is 301-471-5758 if you need to contact me if you need
further directions.
