Hi All,
I finally completed my web site www.gpshikingdc.com with the GPS
traces and photos from my (and my friends') hikes and x-ski trips.
It was a project I have been working on over the last 4-5 years and spent 1000s
of hours on. There are 375 unique hike traces on this site, 500 total
traces, 219 photo albums and 7691 photos. A lot of my traces have hike
descriptions in MS Word.
Last year I thought I would finish the site with
year 2007, but then decided to post my latest backpacks, which I consider to be
the most spectacular, and convert all my traces from the Topo! Mid Atlantic
Format (*.tpo) to the GPX format that any mapping software these days
understands. I also wanted to post several of my scenic hikes with
the photo albums. Finally, I updated all my introduction pages this month
with the latest information on the GPS units and mapping and
related software.
I still have 100s of traces that I haven't posted
dating between 2008 and now and may never will. So if you need any
specific trace, ask me, I may have it.
Big chunk of my database are traces taken by Chris
Nolen with the Tuesday Group, Jack Thorsen and Shelley Burns, mainly in the
Shenandoah Park and on the AT.
I haven't decided what I will do next. I may
try to automate my database population process, in which case I will post much
more hikes, I may work on cataloging flora and fauna that I took pictures of, I
may work on my high definition photo albums of the Most Spectacular Places in
the DC Area.
As always, questions, comments are
welcome.
