For those of you attending; I've compiled a short list of some items
that you should bring:
- GPS reciever(s)
- GPS patch cord (interface)
- Batteries
- Laptop (wireless modem if available)
- Become familiar with Google earth
- Spend a few hours getting familiar with the operation of you unit;
especially the areas regarding:
< setting up datum
< setting up coordinate system
< setting up collection protocol (distance or time)
< Exporting data from unit
< investigate if there is a FREE software interface for your
unit; for example:
+ Garmin - BaseCamp (v.3.0.2 - MAC)
+ Delorme - No free software that I can see; however,
USB interface allows direct access to internal
GPX files for export.
+ Magellan - VantagePoint

Looking forward to the day! Weather looks like it will be cooperating.
See you there.

UPDATE: The newest version of Google Earth will allow you to import
GPX files from your GPS receiver.
This would be release 5.2.1.1588

Therefore you may not need to acquire your manufacturers unique
software interface.

Kevin:

Here is the text that I put out on the Web Site (www.patc-maps.net):

"Members of the Maps Committee will be meeting at PATC's Bears Den Trail Center to perform GPS collection field trials  All those interested are invited to attend.

Meeting starts at 10:00 am and we plan to finish up no later than 4:00pm.
I plan on having doughnuts and juice for the start of the meeting. I don't plan on providing lunch so please plan on bringing something to eat.

Our plan is to have members configure their personal GPS devices to the GIS committee's suggested collection settings and to practice collecting data by hiking North and South on the nearby AT.

After collecting our test tracks we will meet back at the Bears Den Conference Center to download the collected data and upload it into our GIS software for review and analysis.

We will have extra GPS's for those that do not own their own devices.

Kevin....meeting is this weekend (Saturday).

Also, it is not required for you to bring a laptop if you do not have
one. I asked because I wanted to be sure that everyone's personal GPS
can interface with it. However Chris pointed out to me that some
people use desktops....heh.
