I've searched the conversations here for a resolution without any success. New user with MacBook M2 running Ardop and VARA HF through Crossover without any issues. Not the case with VARA FM. Rig is Yaesu FT-991A. I"m able to connect to the rig using Rigctld and put the rig into transmit with the tune button on soundcard tab. When I try to send a message, the rig goes into transmit for a brief second or two, then I get the message below:
Pat connection.png
My config. json related to VARA FM is below. Does it look correct?

The cmdPort and dataPort addresses match those on the VARA Setup tab:

Can you see any issues with this configuration? I've tried to connect with three different nearby RMS locations with the same result. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Im not sure if you’re having this issue, but I’ve found that RF getting into the Serial cable can and often does cause the USB device to drop offline. When this happens, Rigctl will fail.. Rigctl is pretty bad at error detection and will just bomb out which in turn causes other apps to fail.

The reason HF vs FM might not be failing could be because the frequency (HF) is being filtered..

Do you have ferrites on the relevant cables?

Hi Gary,

Can you please enable vara debug logging in Pat, and share the output of a new connect attempt?

You enable vara debug logging by setting the environment variable VARA_DEBUG=1. E.g. `VARA_DEBUG=1 pat http`. You should see lots of log output regarding the conversation between Pat and VARA.

Thank you!

Martin et al, the issue was not Pat or VARA FM settings at all. It was settings on the FT991A. I hadn’t synced the baud rate and had to change one other setting. Once that was done, I was able to successfully send two emails. Thanks for your help!
