Can't connect to flrig on Mac

Trying to get pat working on Mac - Big Sur- using flrig.

I get 

"Unable to get frequency from rig my-rig: read tcp 127.0.0.1:52192->127.0.0.1:4321: i/o timeout."

 when starting pat.

I have wsjtx and rumlogNG both working with flrig no problem.

any ideas why pat won't connect?  I double checked my address config and it all matches.
