Keeping eye contact is extremely important both in real life and in movies, but tracking the eyes of a CG creature can be tricky. The creators behind James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water know it all too well because the Na'vi are taller than humans, which makes interaction difficult. But they managed to come up with an eyeline system that effectively solves this problem.

An eyeline match is a film editing technique associated with the continuity editing system. It is based on the premise that an audience will want to see what the character on-screen is seeing. An eyeline match begins with a character looking at something off-screen, followed by a cut of another object or person: for example, a shot showing a man looking off-screen is followed by a shot of a television. Given the audience's initial interest in the man's gaze, it is generally implied on the basis of the second shot that the man in the first was looking at the television, even though the man is never seen looking at the television within the same shot.[1][2]

Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window, for example, makes frequent use of eyeline matches. The main character, played by James Stewart, is confined to his apartment and often looks out its rear window at events in the buildings across from him. Hitchcock frequently cuts from Stewart looking off-screen to various people and events that are assumed to be the focus of his gaze.[3]

Eyeline match also refers to the practice of setting off-camera eyelines for single shots of characters within a scene such that, when these shots are cut together, each of the characters appear to be looking at the correct character, without any confusion. Factors influencing the position of the off-camera eyeline (usually by placing the other actors off camera but sometimes by giving the on-camera actor a mark to look at) include the 180 degree rule, camera lens/height/distance to subject and geography of the set. For instance, matching close-ups of two actors in a scene would be shot on the same lens with the camera placed at a matching height (either the same height, or at the off-camera actor's height or the on-camera actor's height) and distance, with the off-camera actor positioned equidistant from the lens and on opposite sides so that Actor A looks off camera right and Actor B looks off camera left.[4]

Glide the GUIDE Wand's applicator across the top surface of your eyeliner. Unlike traditional creams, GUIDE Line's unique formula is pressed to create a rich, but firm, balm-like texture that pairs perfectly with the Wand. For best results, avoid dipping or digging into the formula with your Wand. Instead, glide along the surface. On first use, you may find it helpful to glide the applicator a few times. After that, one or two swipes is all you'll need!

Note: Avoid dipping or digging into the eyeliner pot as this will scoop up excess product. Our firm, balm-like formula was designed to lightly and evenly coat the Applicator Tip as it glides along the surface

These lashes put your eye health first, as they're made by board-certified ophthalmologist Anika Goodwin, M.D., CEO of Opulence MD Beauty, who claims the brand's "magnetic liner has the safest concentration of microscopic iron oxide particles that assure a strong adhesion," she says. Wizemann tried this pair, noting she had to trim the ends to fit to her lash line. The potted eyeliner was a little bit on the thicker side, but the stiff brush tip helped apply it in one stroke. After, the lashes easily snapped into place and held on throughout the day, feeling "soft and flexible and also looked natural."

Eylure's luxe lashes fluttered their way to high praise among our Beauty Lab pros, who gave it perfect scores for adding volume and length to the appearance of lashes. "It was simpler than any fake eyelash product I tried before," says Beauty, Health & Sustainability Lab Executive Director Birnur Aral. "They amplified [my] look without looking too fake." Testers also raved that it stayed in place all day. Among both novice and pro faux lash users, the eyeliner glided nicely while also making it easy to place the lashes. One thing worth noting: Another tester found the application process a bit tedious as they needed to re-draw the eyeliner multiple times, plus allot extra dry time for it to stick properly.

If you're going for a more dramatic look, these lashes run 17mm in length, packed with layers of volume. In our road test, the lashes stuck to the liner like glue and stayed put. The magnetic eyeliner offers a precise application that resembles traditional liquid eyeliners and dries quickly and isn't messy when applying (a struggle fake lash enthusiasts know all too well with traditional lash glue). Though the round shape is designed to help open up your eyes, one GH editor found that the lashes were still in her vision when wearing them.

In 2020, in response to the need to reduced the number of people on the court, the U.S. Open tennis tournament replaced human line judges on 15 of 17 match courts with Hawk-Eye Live, an advanced system that makes automated line calls in real time. This Hawk-Eye Live system features 18 cameras, six of which are used by a review official to monitor foot faults. The system uses recorded voices to make its calls, which shout "out," "fault" or "foot fault." The courts using Hawk-Eye Live at the U.S. Open will have only a chair umpire to call the score after the system makes the call, and they will take over only if the system malfunctions.

Our Lash & Go Eyeliner is a 3-in-1 product, so it triples as an eyeliner, lash adhesive and magnetic liner. Apply the Lash & Go Eyeliner directly on your lash line for either use. Our Black Lash Adhesive is meant for false lashes only, the adhesive formula would not be able to be used as a liner and needs to be applied directly onto the lash band for application.

The beloved liquid eyeliner pen, made better. Reimagined for striking lines and magic wings, the paddle-shaped tip is designed to make winged and graphic looks as effortless as they look. Use the pen's curved edge for razor-thin lines, and its flat face for bolder graphic looks. The waterproof formula comes in a deep ultra-black that won't budge for 12 hours.

Many communities in Asia and Africa use eyeliners, often referred to as surma, kajal, or kohl, for religious, aesthetic, and medicinal purposes. However, many of these eyeliners contain high levels of the toxic heavy metal, lead. The CDC has determined that no amount of lead is safe for humans. Lead exposure can cause neurological and cardiological damage. In the Afghan community, adults also apply eyeliner to infants and children who are at even higher risk of ingesting the contaminated cosmetic due to their proclivity for hand-to-mouth behavior. Young children are particularly vulnerable because they absorb lead at a higher rate than adults do and because their neurological system is still developing.

Many of the countries that manufacture these cosmetics do not have strongly enforced regulations on lead in cosmetics. In some instances, traditional eyeliners have had labels claiming they are lead-free despite analysis showing they contain high levels of lead. Many of these cosmetics are made using galena, a lead-based mineral that gives the eyeliners their rich coloring. Others are made from the soot of plant oils that may have absorbed lead from the soil.

Mokashi is also compiling a literature review to understand the use of traditional eyeliner, its association with lead poisoning in children, the specific ingredients that contain high levels of lead, and possible lead-free alternatives.

The Research team has also been conducting a collaborative needs assessment with the Afghan community to determine the religious and cultural basis of the use of these eyeliners as well as barriers to switching to safer alternatives. The goal is to use the results to develop culturally appropriate solutions to reduce exposures in the Afghan community as well as others using these products.

An eyeline match can also show the eyelines between multiple actors within a scene. This becomes more difficult with each separate actor with their own respective shots. A poorly executed match will often make a scene seem unprofessional and take your viewer out of the story.

Composing two separate shots with the same shot size, distance from the subject, focal length, horizon, and depth of field will give you the best chance to create an effective eyeline match cut. These can be close-ups, over the shoulder shots, or any other matching combination.

To follow the 180-degree rule, filmmakers create an imaginary line between two subjects in a scene. Then they keep every camera setup on the same side of this line, within the same 180 degrees. Here's a breakdown of 180-degree rule and how it helps keep eyeline match shots consistent and legible.

There will be times where you need to tell a story with multiple characters in a scene, and it is both inefficient and ultimately jarring to have separate shots and separate eyelines for each character in these scenes. Use two-shots and three-shots for a more manageable production and edit.

Take a look at this eyeline match cut example from Burn After Reading to see how the Coen Brothers composed their shots to create eyeline match and then later used eyeline match editing to create a coherent scene. Let's watch the scene first before we break it down, shot-by-shot.
