How to Download and Install OS X Mountain Lion on Your Mac

OS X Mountain Lion is the ninth major release of the Mac operating system, which was launched in July 2012. It introduced many new features, such as iCloud integration, Notification Center, Messages, AirPlay Mirroring, Game Center, Gatekeeper, and more. If you have an older Mac that is not compatible with the latest version of macOS, you may still be able to download and install OS X Mountain Lion for free from Apple's website . Here are the steps to do so:

    • Check your Mac's compatibility. OS X Mountain Lion requires the following technologies:
      • OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion 10.7, or Mountain Lion 10.8 already installed
      • 2 GB of memory
      • 8 GB of available space
You will also need one of the following Mac models:
        • iMac (Mid 2007-2020)
        • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
        • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
        • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
        • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
        • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
        • Xserve (Early 2009)
Any Mac that shipped with Mac OS X Mavericks or later will not be compatible with this installer.
        • Download the OS X Mountain Lion installer app. You can get it from the [Archive.org] website, which hosts the official OS X Mountain Lion installers (10.8.4 and 10.8.5) from the Mac App Store. Both versions are full installers and are zipped. Un-archive the zip archive and you will get the app installer. Alternatively, you can also download it from Apple's support website, which provides a direct link to the installer app. The file size is about 4.45 GB.
        • Create a bootable USB or ISO. You can use the InstallESD.dmg disk image found under Contents/SharedSupport/ in the installer app to create a bootable USB or ISO. You will need a USB drive with at least 8 GB of space or a blank DVD. You can find instructions on how to do that on the Internet or YouTube. For example, you can use the Disk Utility app on your Mac to restore the disk image to your USB drive or DVD.
        • Install OS X Mountain Lion on your Mac. Once you have created a bootable USB or ISO, you can use it to install OS X Mountain Lion on your Mac. You will need to restart your Mac and hold down the Option key while booting up to select the USB or DVD as the startup disk. Then follow the on-screen instructions to install OS X Mountain Lion on your Mac. You may need to erase your hard drive or partition before installing if you want a clean install.

Note: If you get a damaged message when launching the installer app, no need to worry. Run this command in Terminal: xattr -cr "wherever your installer is. drag and drop into terminal, and remove quotes." OR xattr -c "wherever your installer is. drag and drop into terminal, and remove quotes."

Note: While installing, if you get an error message such as Apple can't verify your computer, change the date setting October 1st, 2012 in Terminal or System Preferences. It should work after that.

I hope this article was helpful for you. Enjoy your OS X Mountain Lion!
