Fellow Passporters,

I may be (but probably am not) the last person to get this news, but I
urge you all to become familiar with the information found in this
article and the other documents it references:

https://panbo.com/2022-gps-rollovers-furuno-airmar-jrc-and-who-else/

As you will see, the 1024-week clock of GPS satellites "rolled over"
(that is, the 12-bit counter incremented back to zero) at midnight on
April 6, 2019.  Most of us and our devices (except really old devices)
were not affected right away, because their manufacturers had pulled
some software tricks to allow them to continue to function with
apparently correct information until...now.

But that nearly 3-year grace period is rapidly expiring for a lot of
devices.  For example, on my Passport 40, Dream SeQueL, I use a
Raymarine RayStar 125 GPS antenna/receiver.  It will start supplying
incorrect date information on my on-boat networks some time in March of
this year.  And, guess what the fix is -- for this device and most
devices made three or more years ago: "Replace the equipment" That's
straight from Raymarine's documents.  (I've been researching the
replacement, and its going to cost me about $500, including the
pole-mounting kit and some other hardware.)

My MFDs (chartplotters) will continue to function for another six years,
but (again) the official response is "Replace the equipment".  As the
article cited above says, this problem applies to the great majority of
equipment from most vendors, except for stuff made fairly recently
(e.g., Raymarine's Axiom Pro line) that can be "fixed" (for another 1024
weeks, I guess) via a software update.

Hope this helps,
   Jim
