Dear Passport owners,

We have a 1984 Passport, hull 78, still in French Polynesia. When we arrived for the season, we notices this disconnect under the sink. The sink tailpiece (that’s what I’d call it) and flange for the pipe (it’s brazed to the stainless steel pipe that connects to the hose, then the sea cock), both threaded have come loose.

Obviously the two pieces could not have become unscrewed, so I suspect that they were not held together by the threads at all. The pipe flange is intact but looks filled with some kind of hardened material, likely caulk. Certainly we can’t buy parts here. We are loath to mess with that hose since we’ll not get replacement for it.

My thought is to plug the pipe with a rag to seal it, then use acetone to soften whatever is in the threads of both pieces. I could use a brass bristle brush to clean the threads of as much of the material as possible. I’d use a caulk, perhaps some 3M 4000, to reattach the two pieces, using whatever bracing and such are needed.

Anyone have any ideas what all of this is or had similar difficulties? It’s not surprising since the boat is 41 years old.

Thank you.

Hi Bill,

It looks like the threads on the strainer have just rotted away. That whole fitting is just a standard sink strainer. The tail piece is custom but heavy gauge so likely still fine. I replaced mine with ones from Home Depot but they didn't last too long. I carried new Grohe ones back to French Polynesia two years ago that are holding up much better.
The hose is likely still serviceable too.

Cheers,
Ken

Understood.  Thank you.  Not much plumbing on Raiatea.

Get in touch with Esteban. He is an enterprising guy there that can likely help you source parts. He speaks English, French, Spanish, and maybe others. His business is Les Increvables - Raiatea Dinghy Repairs, but it is a sideline. He helped us and friends last year.

Esteban
He is on WhatsApp.

If you do reach out to him please tell him Anne & Ken on Naida say hello. He sourced and replaced the fuel pump on our Mercury 9.9 dinghy motor and then tracked down a new prop too.
