Since my last post was so well-responded, here's another issue on which I'd welcome input.

We love the idea of eliminating fossil-fuels from homes, but there are two applications I'm finding it hard to replicate with electricity (stay tuned for #2 in a separate post.)

Since it's summer, I'll start with BBQs. Combustion is very good at delivery high power output, and that's really apparent in BBQ grills. I've gathered the following info on electric options, but would love to hear of anyone's direct experience.

The delta between electric output and combustion is very apparent in these. The highest power model (the "Texan") is 3,000 W, which equates to ~10,000 BTU/hr, which is about the output of the rotisserie burner on Viking BBQ or equivalent.

Regards,
Graham

Graham, a couple months ago I did massive research on this and landed on the Ninja XL. It's amazing and I highly recommend it! I'd opt out of the package that includes the stand... instead we got this table and it's a great value.

For us it came down to this vs the Weber Lumin, but the latter is more $$ and I ended up getting sold by the air fryer, taller height and other benefits of the Ninja. Here are some pics from the last couple months! The thing cooks things really fast and you'd never know it wasn't a "conventional" grill. It's just really great. Salmon, steaks, brussel sprouts and tempura veggies in air fryer...

I must confess, I have all electric for critical functions including heat pumps.  But I did bring gas to the house for a ventless fireplace, BBQ grill and firepit.

Hi katy,
I just looked up the ninja grill and am shockingly impressed.   As a passive house die hard, the one thing I thought I’d still never consider giving up is my simple weber charcoal grill.   I’ve become quite good at smoking ribs and pork shoulders on it.  The dissonance with my values hasn’t escaped me, but I use it infrequently so it seemed like an okay compromise.

Thank you for your sharing your research findings - looks like there’s a real chance I could give up my charcoal habit!

Mark

Thanks Katy, I’ve still got gas…[for grilling] and hope to switch out soon. Have you found any special power or cleaning issues?
