Manticorewas one of few planets where a virus capable of seriously attacking humans existed. The primary exploration company, Franchot et Fils, had not discovered its presence, and thus the colonists of the colonial expedition to Manticore had no knowledge of it when they arrived.

The "Plague" was first discovered on Manticore in 1464 PD[1], but was not considered a serious health risk in its original form. However, in 1480 PD, after persistently resisting efforts to simply erradicate it and be done with it, the virus suddenly mutated into an extremely lethal form and the death toll soared within months. In 1482 PD, the Plague jumped quarantine from Manticore to the neighboring colony world of Sphinx.

In 1484 PD, an effective vaccine was developed. Soon, new immigration policies to attract the needed replacement population were debated. In the next two years, aided immigration was proposed and the colony transformed itself into the Star Kingdom of Manticore, with a new constitution adopted as a preliminary to aided immigration.

In 1487 PD, the virus mutated a second time, rendering the original vaccine ineffective; the plans for assisted immigration were shelved temporarily, but taken up again two years later as Manticore's manpower needs became critical. A few hardy souls accepted the invitation.

A new effective vaccine against the second mutation was finally developed in 1496 PD, and aided immigration numbers soon soared. The Plague was "thrown back on the defensive", but persisted in isolated pockets and outbursts for several years. The "Plague Years" did not officially end till 1510 PD, when the government announced the eradication of the virus in the Star Kingdom. (SK1, Tech Bu9)

The social and political consequences of the Plague were enormous: due to the loss of a majority of the population, the surviving Manticorans had to invite new settlers to help rebuild their colony. However, they feared to lose too much influence on the world they had purchased for 5.75 billion EuroDollars if thousands of new colonists arrived.

The solution was re-writing the Manticoran constitution: the original colonists transformed their star nation into a constitutional monarchy under the leadership of Roger Winton, now King Roger I of the Star Kingdom of Manticore. MCT shareholders purchased vast areas of land and established themselves as the Manticoran peerage, thus assuring their continued domination of the planet and its society. (UHH)

When deploying Cylance for the first time in a new environment, best practice is to have it run in "audit mode" where Cylance detects but does not act upon it. Of course, this would not be very secure if you don't have another anti-virus in place. Starting from Windows 10 and Server 2016, Windows Defender is automatically installed and active if no other anti-virus product is installed. However, installing Cylance the regular way would result in Windows detecting the presence of Cylance and disabling most of the functionality of Defender. Luckily, you can workaround the issue by having Cylance not register as an anti-virus with Windows Security Center during the installation (or afterwards). This way, Windows Defender will remain fully active, together with Cylance, making sure that Cylance can be run in "audit mode" and having Defender in place should a legitimate malware be detected.

Installing Cylance without registering it with Windows Security Center can be achieved with an installation parameter. For example, the command-line below would silently install Cylance without registering it with WSC. Notice the REGWSC parameter: set it to 0 to not register.

Note that this only works on client systems (i.e. running Windows 10). On Windows Server 2016 and newer, even with this parameter, Defender will remain active. See further down this article to see how to disable Defender on Windows Server 2016 and up when the "audit" period is over and you want to fully activate Cylance and disable Defender.

So, after you've installed Cylance without registering it, you can let it run and weed out the false positives, etc. When the "audit period" is over, you want to activate Cylance and in this regard, you may also want to disable Windows Defender in the process. The recommended way is to register Cylance with Windows Security Center. This will not only disable most of the Windows Defender functionality but will also provide you with alerts through Windows Security Center if there are any problems with your Cylance installation. Rather than reinstalling Cylance, you can simply trigger a registration command to Cylance, which will do the rest.

As explained before, Server editions (2016 and newer) do not have a Windows Security Center. Therefore, Windows Defender will always be active, even if Cylance is installed and the (un)register triggers will not have any effect. To effectively disable Windows Defender, you will need to disable it via GPO or via registry:

This episode was so fantastic! Walter makes me fall in love with hi in every episode haha! And it was so nice to finally have Charlie taking on a bigger part because Kirk Acevedo is such a talented actor. Nice to see him flex his acting muscles there. Speaking of which, they finally gave Peter something more to do! What a relief! Although I'm sure what brought on his drop-of-a-hat moodiness at the beginning. You'd think a little midnight chat with Rachel would cheer a man up. Sheesh! But I really hope the writers stop this Peter/Rachel business soon. I know this was the first time it was blatant and obvious, but it kinda made me cringe.

Adam Morgan,

Thank you for an excellent review of "Unleashed." Rufus II was wonderfully gross, and not cheesy- looking at all as I had feared.

I thought Walter was THE stand-alone in this one. The most lucid and sober we've ever seen him. And compared to his outlandishness in episode 2 it was like he was his own doppelganger. I also agree that Peter's unmitigated fear for Walter was a brilliant moment.

A manticore? I was at the "Myths and Legends" exhibit in Boston a few weeks ago, and I sure wish I had been paying more attention! The chupacabra there bore an uncanny resemblance to Marshall Bowman's creature, but I can barely remember the manticore!

I highly recommend that exhibit if it comes to Chicago. JR Orci and company would absolutely love it too if it traveled to LA. They'd fill up many notebooks with all of the creatures presented there.

I loved this episode. However, my husband and I both saw similarities to this episode and the Flukeworm episode from the X-files. I love the X-Files. I think this show keeps getting better, I just hope they don't copy too much from X-files.

I finally was able to watch Unleashed tonight, and I loved it. I agree with your comment about how Fringe's stand-alone episodes have gotten amazing. Both Inner Child and Unleashed were wonderful episodes, even though they were very different.

Also, I think that in your "Stray Thoughts" section from here on out, you should post the solution to the code for the episode. That way, we can each confirm it and then work together to see if it fits a sentence.

Andrew,

Solutions to the Glyph code, and other interesting finds are posted in the screencaps / Easter eggs section.

You can also see a list of all the glyph codes together at Fringepedia.net.

James Heller starts by tapping into the Blacknet terminal. He comes across files about one doctor -- David Castleman. Castleman has a close connection to Douglas Rooks. After scouting the area, Heller finds Dr. Castleman all by himself, tending to some "patients" in one of the camps. Since there's no one else around, Heller easily consumes Castleman without raising a ruckus.

Heller intercepts a transmission among two Gentek science teams. The scientists are working with patients who died after becoming infected, and they plot to use the blood samples to weaponize the Blacklight virus. Heller tracks the locations of the science teams lead by Dr. Drummond and Dr. Stone and picks off the scientists one at a time. When the science teams fail to respond, Gentek thinks it to be that their new phones aren't working.

Having put a halt to another of Gentek's schemes, Heller returns to the terminal. When he accesses the the terminal, it brings up the identity of a Lieutenant Cletus Ransom -- a name which Heller believes sounds fake. Heller hunts down Cletus and comes across him patrolling the outside of a restricted area. Ransom is then absorbed into Heller's biomass.

Just at that moment, a voice on the radio calls out. Director Severin and his Alpha team are under attack in an underground spawning hive. Heller finds spawning hive J-10 and enters it. Heller deems that the Alpha team is getting their comeuppance and lends a hand to the Infected by killing off all the scientists and any Blackwatch Spectres who remain. When Heller exits the hive, he finds a full Blackwatch squadron waiting for him and finds out it was all a trap. The commander mocks Heller and and engages the onslaught. Heller takes out the two APCs, forcing the commander out of his ride. As payback, Heller consumes the commander and then takes leave of the area.

Up for a round of gwent? If you play gwent: the witcher card game, you have most likely noticed the new update that came not long ago called Journey.

As soon as i saw the art for it, i fell in love with the look of the manticore armor in it and wanted to implement the rolled up sleeves look into it!
