TheWinds of Sinhala is a historical novel, written by Sri Lankan novelist Colin De Silva, and published in 1982.[1] The story is set in Sri Lanka in the 2nd century BC and is a fictionalized take on the historical events surrounding the Sri Lankan King Dutugemunu's campaign to defeat the foreign Chola King Elara, and reunify Sri Lanka under native rule.

The story is written as the personal account of the fictional character, Prince Rodana. The narrative follows the life of Rodana, and in particular his connection as personal advisor and close friend to Prince Gamini, the future King Dutugemunu. The novel weaves together Gamini's ruthless ambition to reunite Sri Lanka, the story of his military campaign, and his romantic relationship with a woman named Raji.

After studying Sanskrit and Sinhala under Pelane Sri Vajiragnana Thero and reading world literature in his spare time while working as a clerk, Silva wrote Lakshmi, his second novel, in 1922.[1] He continued to write popular novels and short story collections. Several of his novels include Kalae Handa (the first Sinhala novel to be made a movie) and Hingana Kolla, which was also made into a movie.

His residence 'Silvermere' at No. 126, W A Silva Mawatha, Wellawatte has now been turned in to a museum containing artifacts of his time, hand written manuscripts, copies of novels, and other memorabilia.

Some of his extensive correspondence with English missionaries, including that great Musician Ira D. Sankey, is preserved in the Library of the British Museum, where it has been subjected to research by many a Sri Lankan Scholar. Methodists have sung his praises as a hymn writer, temperance leader, lay preacher and the first layman in the Methodist Synod. Yet his greatest claim to fame lies in the fact that he was indeed the first Sinhala novelist.

I am saddened that apart from the head stone at the family grave in the Rawatawatta, Moratuwa General Cemetery, there is nothing to commemorate this literary genius who made such a significant contribution to Sinhala Literature.

Sri Lanka's best-selling novel Malkanti Gunaratha's "Adaraya Pujaniyai" is a charming novel that has joined the Sinhala novel scene. Published by ProMate, this novel is based on a true-life love story and is one of the popular new stories about the complex emotions, desires, and obstacles of two young people.

The novel is a literary genre which depicts social reality, its discomforts, and political underpinnings. By looking at three Sinhala novels published in 2019, this paper investigates how the woman is portrayed through a patriarchal lens in literature. The chosen novels are Nishkranthiya by Sunethra Rajakarunanayake, Kumara Kobei by Shamel Jayakody and Thee Haa Thaa by Surath de Mel. They have unique narrative styles and a noteworthy representation of femininity. The study is based mainly on the following themes of feminist theory: patriarchy, sex, and gender. The main characters of all three novels are women and patriarchy plays a major role in their lives. All three novels present patriarchy as the norm and it is reinforced through issues concerning domestic violence, gender, and reproduction.

This week marks 40 years since the brutal anti-Tamil pogrom in Sri Lanka that led to thousands killed and hundreds disappeared within a few days. This bloody month in 1983 came to be called Black July and marked the beginning of a civil war that would continue for well over two and a half decades, leaving a devastating death toll and 800,000 Sri Lankan Tamils displaced. Sri Lankan literature is an ocean and comprises an old, vast, and deeply varied body of writing. The long and horrifically violent civil war remains an open wound and thus, unsurprisingly, is the subject of immense literary and artistic exploration to this day.

Surly and stoic forensic pathologist Anil returns to Sri Lanka after a 15-year absence to conduct a human rights investigation as the civil war rages all around her. With a skeleton named Sailor as her evidence, Anil works to prove the existence of state-sponsored terrorism. This literary masterpiece contains a fascinating supporting cast that includes the brothers Gamini and Sarath, the blind epigraphist Palipana and alcoholic sculptor Ananda.

Set during the five years that led up to the events of 1983, the novel introduces readers to an ethnically diverse group of families on Sal Mal Lane seen primarily through the eyes of the Herath children. But the harmony between the families and the complex friendships are put to test as the war draws close.
