Introduction:
Paschim Paaila is the informal youth network focused on environmental health with water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and disasters as social concern. It was formed on July 17, 2009 after the outbreak of Diarrhea/Cholera epidemic in mid and Far Western region of Nepal with a youthful spirit of volunteer services. Being a YOUTH MOVEMENT (YUWA ABHIYAN), it envisions environmentally sound and healthy communities through youth led initiatives. It is also dedicated to prepare, respond and mitigate disasters and epidemics through WASH education, awareness, research and advocacy. Environment and Public Health Organization (ENPHO) is providing secretariat for Paschim Paaila.
Paschim Paaila is conducting various youth led activities to advocate and disseminate information on WASH, Disaster and Epidemic concerns which are continuously being conducted with support from other organization working in these sectors.
Concept:
Menstruation is a biological process just like defecation or urination. Maintaining hygiene during menstruation is important for women’s well-being, mobility, and dignity. Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) is a subject of ‘silence’, and discussion of the topic among women or even mother and daughter is very limited. Lack of privacy (to use toilets) inhibits change of cloth or napkin for long hours and also improper drying of washed cloth creates lots of problems. Adolescent girls drop out from schools due to improper or lack of water and sanitation facilities in schools is very high. Even when girls are not completely withdrawn from school, menstruation affects attendance for many.
The first step in getting rid of menstrual myths is to talk about them. It is a good idea to ask if there is any scientific basis to what you're told about your periods. Once you are aware and capable of separating a myth from scientific fact, you can also help others by giving them right information. Thus Paschim Paaila has come up with Drama charity show to contribute the girls of 10 government schools of sindhupalchowk district with “Menstrual Hygiene Management Campaign. And in order to make the MHM campaign functional as per the expectation, the drama charity show is intended to launch.
