Members of our Peace and Social Concerns Committee consistently bring news of events outside, but of interest to, the Orange Grove Meeting Community. While it may not be appropriate to announce these through the OGM email list, it should be helpful to have a single place to list these for members or attenders who are interested in these activities.

You don't need to be a P&SC Committee member to add an event here. Please feel free to contribute event announcements that you feel would be of interest to and helpful for our community.

Some suggestions: please give the event title, date and time, and a short description of the event. It may be helpful to share any experience you have with the organization presenting the event, and why it may be of interest to us.

1) OGMM Quaker Social Change Ministry (QSCM) Meeting
Tuesday, Feb. 7th at 7pm in the Garage Classroom.
Please join us as we embark in a small support and worship group format celebrating and supporting each others spiritual journeys and practices, sharing stories, and supporting social change through AFSC's recommended practice of "accompaniment."

We may share stories from people's experiences of the Womens' March this week, and are considering supporting immigrant outreach in the Orange Grove neighborhood, although in our formative stages we welcome everyone's concerns and leadings. We plan to pick a single AFSC key topic to address as a group.

2) AFSC QSCM Participant and Facilitator Support Conference Call
Thursday, Feb. 9th at 7pm.

You can join by dialing 866-740-1260 and entering access code 2419995#.
Members from QSCM groups around the country can connect and discuss their groups, things that seem helpful, and challenges they may be facing.

3) AFSC Conference Call for Spirited Action
Thursday, Feb. 16th 5:30-6:30pm PST

Communities against Islamophobia with Mary Zerkel and Dina El-Rifai
You can join by dialing 866-740-1260 and entering access code 2419995#.

Muslim organizations note that the climate of profiling and suspicion is worse now than it was after 9/11 and that incidents of intimidation, bullying and violence have spiked in recent months.

AFSC's Communities Against Islamophobia project aims to develop new allies to those affected by anti-Muslimism in the Trump era. Dina El-Rifai and Mary Zerkel will discuss the ways that the dominant narratives around Muslims/Islam create the environment for personal harm as well as state violence level harm, and ways that allies can work to support the Muslim community.

4) Western Friend Online Workshop
Online conversations on topics important to Quaker Meetings
Bullies and Other Difficult Friends
Thursday, February 16, 2017
6:30 PM Pacific 90 minutes
In the “Workshop Room” of Western Friend Connect

We are planning a second [Faith Based Lobbying] training on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 12:30 to 2:30 pm. The location will be announced. In addition to following up on our previous training, we will present info about FCL-CA, the Sacramento lobby, to learn about important upcoming state bills, particularly those relating to immigration and the environment. Please invite your friends to join us in this second training. See

1) You are invited to join us to visit Judy Chu's office on Thursday, Feb 9, at 10 am, if you are her constituent. Our focus will be on immigration and refugees, specifically the Bridge Act (which she supports). Location: 527 S Lake Ave #106, Pasadena, CA 91101. We will meet at the nearby Pete's coffee house at 9:00 am to discuss talking points and strategies for our visit. Please email me if you plan to attend and I'll send you more info. (Anthony Manousos: interfai...@aol.com)

2) Email your elected officials regarding the Bridge Act, which would protect young people from being detained or deported to places unknown to them. This Act is specifically focused on "Dreamers," those who came to this country as children and were at risk of deportation until Obama signed the Executive Order known as DACA. Trump may rescind DACA and it is up to Congress to enact a law protecting these young people. This link will make it easy to contact your elected officials:

3) If you are not a constituent of Judy Chu, please consider contacting your representative, particularly Adam Schiff. To set up an appointment with Schiff, call (818) 450-2900 or (323) 315-5555
His office info: 245 E. Olive Avenue, #200, Burbank, California 91502.

4) Call or email friends in other states or districts, especially red states and districts, and encourage them to lobby their elected officials around issues like immigration, affordable health care, environment, etc. Let them know about the fcnl.org website, which makes it easy to contact elected officials. We need to go "viral" and make this a nation-wide effort.

5) Write a letter to the editor. Here are tips to help insure that your letter will be published:

"39 Questions for White People" workshop

AFSC's page about their support of the artwork:

Salon's article about the work:

Please join us in a dialogue about racism, privilege, and whiteness, inspired by Naima Lowe's installation, created to inspire discussion of these issues.

The deceptively simple text asks complex questions about race and accountability. This work started as an experiment based in the artist's curiosity about how whiteness is framed and understood by white people.

The artist says of the piece, "The work of creating the book became an exercise in turning the emotional labor of racism into tangible physical labor. I was able to turn all that pain into an object, which is incredibly strange, but also incredibly freeing."
