If you have been wanting to read a mysterious mystery, this might be your book. Lots of strange things are happening at the green glass house. A bunch of unique characters, ranging from doctors to smugglers to ghosts! It happens that the green glass house is in a town full of smugglers. When the innkeepers son meets the cooks daughter, they become instant friends. But some strange going on is happening. Will the mystery surrounding the green glass house ever be solved, and why are so many guests at the house in the middle of winter?
It was wintertime at Greenglass House, and Milo, the innkeepers son who was adopted, was going to spend his vacation relaxing, but on the first cold night of his break, the bell outside rings. A lot. After many bell-ringing, Milo's house is overflowing with guests, who have stories of how they are connected to the Greenglass House. Will Milo and Meddy(cook's daughter)find out about the secret of Greenglass House?
This book is magnificent!! Strange customers keep coming to this greenglass house. Milo just wants some time to himself!! He was finishing his homework when the customers started coming in! He met Meddy , and lot's of other friendly? customers....Meddy and Milo start a company...a secret one. Where they become characters. Milo as Nagspeake. Milo then discovers somebody is a thief....perhaps it is Mr. Gowervine? OR somebody entirely different! They soon find out that Mr. Vincent is up to the plan a thief!!!! And Ms. Georgiana and Ms. Candler seem to know each other and who is Owen? Maybe he is a loved one by both of these characters....Is Addie Whitcher still living as a ghost? Maybe it is Meddy....Clues are all around! On Mrs. Hereward's bag too..and a mysterious map?!! This is a definite thriller!
I love the mystery and the excitement of this book. It has so many characters with unknown, mysterious backgrounds. My favorite part of the book was when the ghost of Addie Whitcher appears to everyone in the room and makes Mr. Vinge and his helpers leave Greenglass House.
Greenglass house starts rather interestingly, with Milo, a kid who DOES NOT like anything to change. He expects to have a perfectly cozy and wonderful week off from school. Until the first guest arrives. Then another. And another. He would have gone crazy if not for Meddy, the cook's daughter. Not long after meeting her, things start to go missing. The book was nice, but if you're looking for a thriller, this book is not the place to look. It was pleasant, but usually in a mystery I'm looking for something that will send a shiver up my spine. It was interesting enough to keep me turning the pages, especially near the end, but I think Kate could have added a little more spice. And it was slow paced. Three stars.

Illustrator Michaela Goade became the first BIPOC woman and first Indigenous illustrator to win the Caldecott medal when the 2021 Youth Media Awards were announced. Goade was one of many women creators recognized as women swept the Caldecott and Newbery medals.
Could there be even more Newbery love for Joyce Sidman? Winter Bees & Other Poems of the Cold, illustrated by Rick Allen, is stunning. (Sidman got a Newbery Honor in 2011 for Dark Emperor & Other Poems of the Night., also illustrated by Allen.)
This will be a tough year for me, because I have really and truly LOVED a whole lot of books. Narrowing down will be hard, but my favorites thus far are: BOYS OF BLUR, THE NIGHT GARDENER, GREENGLASS HOUSE, REVOLUTION, PORT CHICAGO 50.
I loved Countdown and still remain unconvinced by the arguments I heard germane to the pictures and other media, but the committee did not select it, so the point is mute. However, I think Revolution does a fabulous job of integrating this extra material directly into the plot structure and I think the story really captures the time period exceptionally well. The story is better and the various voices of the book much more interesting and compelling. The fact that this book contrasts so well with current events (Ferguson anyone?) is so much frosting. Whether this will be a book that rises above all others this year remains to be read, but so far it is a book that certainly deserves serious consideration.
Can someone please send a Blue Angel to sky-write a message over my house when Heavy Medal starts up? I live near an Air Force Base so how hard could it be? It is going to take all day to get caught up and who is going to process my new books and teach my students in the meantime?.
