Youmay be better served by mixing up extra of your background color at the start of your work and tubing it. This would avoid a new potential worry and avoid unexpected interaction, latex paints are basically acrylic sometimes with more or less solids in them and interactions between acrylics and oil sometimes vary (potential adhesion issues or increased sensitivity to thermal variations). Tubes are extremely inexpensive and provide excellent storage for mixes that you may use often, I mix and tube a combination of PV19 and PR101 paints to use as a replacement for PR83.

However if you do choose to use a latex paint mix some chalk into your can of latex to reduce surface sheen of the dried paint and provide a bit of absorbency to it. This will encourage mechanical adhesion of oil paints put on top, a gloss can be later added via oiling out or a varnish if desired.

Materials sold in art stores have usually been engineered for the creation of fine art paintings, and even some of THEM are questionable in their longevity, or their compatibility with oil paints, in my opinion.

interior house paint IS designed to stick to a wall forever unless effected by moisture or heat but its not considered archival quality. Can you use it? Of course. Will it last 100-200-500 yrs? who knows.. the question is ..do YOU care?

Yes, they do hold up very well IF, IF you get the best quality interior 100% acrylic. Get it in flat (satin would probably be okay too). I have looked into this before and you can expect the top quality acrylic house paint to be better in pigment and quality than most any student brand acrylic artist paint.

If you do research on the mid cenutry works of very famous modern painters that used house paints for their efforts, you will find that they do not hold up well, they deteriorate at a faster rate than good quality artist colors and that museums are now spending monies that were earmarked for purchases as monies to try and maintain and prevent further deterioration of these works. In my humble opinion that does not constitute a suitable quality substitute. This has happened in far less than a century.

Unfortunately real world art is not always protected behind a false wall, with the exception of that one Rockwell painting. Artwork is frequently transported, crated, moved and jostled, removed from the stretchers and rolled, unrolled and re-stretched. While displayed in climate controlled environs if it is of museum quality, there are few venues that are ideal for artwork, especially homes where they are exposed to cooking fumes, heat, cold, damp, dry, direct sunlight and a plethora of pets, dander, dust, grease, hands, and heaven know what else.

If there was one person I had to trust it most certainly would be Mark Golden. The research that has come from Golden Paints is amazing and they are there with a helping hand if it is within their abilities. Are they correct all the time, maybe not but I think I would trust their insights on fine arts materials over Joe from the home depot any day of the week.

Yes, ideally I would want to use professional grade artist acrylics, of course, however, I do think that top quality 100% acrylic house paint beats most, if not all, student grade acrylics. That has been my experience so far. The KILZ I used beat Art Advantage and Prima acrylics as far as toughness and coverage.

I never thought about using house paint like this before. Why not? If is it good quality; a primer or underpainting? I say whatever floats the boat as long as the end result is quality that is what matters.

This British brand started making waves in the US right around the time we purchased our house in 2013. I used this paint exclusively for the first few years we were renovating and have about 50% of my home painted with this brand.

Thank you so much for this thorough review which jives with my experience of both brands.

Sadly, from the BM website: AURA Grand Entrance

Benjamin Moore AURA Grand Entrance paint has been discontinued as of August 1, 2022.

Hence we used BM ADVANCE Interior Paint (waterborne alkyd) in semigloss which was/is astonishingly oil-like in both application and durability/hardness. No exterior version (yet?).

Thanks so much Susan and Will for the spot-on recs!

I had never used BM, but when we moved into our house this summer, I noticed how nice the hallways looked, and found the BM Aura can in the basement. I used it in our bedroom, and was absolutely amazed that it was

truly a one coat paint.

I adore all the paints you have chosen for your home so this was a real treat learning from an expert. And, thank you for putting it in blog format so that I can refer back to it. You two are inspirational, thanks for sharing.

Lead-based paint is still present in millions of homes, normally under layers of newer paint. If the paint is in good shape, the lead-based paint is usually not a problem. Deteriorating lead-based paint (peeling, chipping, chalking, cracking, damaged, or damp) is a hazard and needs immediate attention.

Soil, yards and playgrounds can become contaminated when exterior lead-based paint from houses or buildings flakes or peels and gets into the soil. Soil may also be contaminated from past use of leaded gasoline in cars, from industrial sources, or even from contaminated sites, including former lead smelters. Lead is also naturally occurring and it can be found in high concentrations in some areas.

Lead in soil can be ingested as a result of hand-to-mouth activity that is common for young children and from eating vegetables that may have taken up lead from soil in the garden. Lead in soil may also be inhaled if resuspended in the air or tracked into your house thereby spreading the contamination.

Older playground equipment can still contain old lead-based paint, and artificial turf and playground surfaces made from shredded rubber can contain lead. Take precautions to ensure young children do not eat shredded rubber or put their hands in their mouth before washing them. Read more on playgrounds and artificial turf fields.

Lead in household dust results from indoor sources such as old lead-based paint on surfaces that are frequently in motion or bump or rub together (such as window frames), deteriorating old lead-based paint on any surface, home repair activities, tracking lead-contaminated soil from the outdoors into the indoor environment, or even from lead dust on clothing worn at a job site.
