Hi everyone,

The gabbai at the Orthodox minyan at Brandeis reached out to JOFA to see if we had any ideas on where to purchase a new portable mechitza. The current structure they have is a set of metal poles and stands with beautiful silk panels. They want to find a structure that's more portable (i.e. lighter) than the metal, but preferably one where they can still use the silks. Any ideas?

They are also curious to hear what Partnerhsip Minyanim with portable mechitzot use.

Thank you!
Rivka

For many years, Kol Sasson (Skokie) used portable coat racks from The Container Store and shower curtains (!) from Bed Bath & Beyond. It was rather ingenious - if you didn't know the original purpose of the two items, you would have thought the mechitza was made to order.

I'm not sure the coat racks we purchased are still available, but I'd recommend thinking out of the box.

We used PVC and adapted curtains at Rosh Pina until they got a new one after I moved. It was light and could break down in 5 minutes into a small bag for carrying. The only problem was kids (usually mine) walking into it, but larger feet would have solved (we just didn’t have the space for larger feet).

Suggestion: If you use PVC and the uprights are 1-1/2" or 2" pvcm you can slide them over tampers (eg. https://www.amazon.com/AMES-Companies-Inc-Temper-Tamper/dp/B0009XEN60/ref=asc_df_B0002YRY9O/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=167167561169&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6313716400001886489&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9003664&hvtargid=pla-307309033828&th=1)

These are heavy enough so the whole business does now fall out, easily disassembled, and compact.

For people who rent space and need to set up/take down on Shabbat, one would hopefully make a she'elat rav to find out what's permissible and what isn't. I am the rav for our minyan in West Orange and I am still on the fence (less so sliding PVC on and off of tampers, more so whether sliding PVC pipe into PVC fittings falls into the activity classified as "hiduk" or not.)
