"EDITOR'S
CORNER"
*********************************************
Hi,
I
know. We didn't bring out any issue of "Partners" in November. Our
fault. Our apologies. No excuses, just apologies.
This
issue appears the day after Christmas 2005. Not too late to wish all
readers a Happy and Merry Christmas. And a Happy New Year
too!
December 26. The day tsunami struck exactly a year
ago. Thousands perished. Survivors scarred for life. Hopes
dashed. Businesses seriously affected. A tragedy of biblical
magnitude.
Those of us who are still alive -- that includes you and
I -- need to be thankful that we can open a notebook or PC and work on it.
I don’t know about you -- but I pledge to work hard to make my dreams come
true. I don't want all my unfulfilled dreams to visit me at my deathbed
and accuse me of making them die with me.
Okay, back to this
issue.
Our Personal Development article, "Awareness For Success,"
by Frederick Pearce, says that your conscious mind can only deal with a certain
amount of stimuli, so you must train your subconscious mind to let in everything
relevant to your success. An article worth reading and
keeping.
On the Business Development side, we talk about the
quintessential business card. The business card? Do we need to learn
how to capitalize on it? Oh, yes, we do. Too often, we forget that
it's a powerful business tool. So, do yourself a favor and go read
Business Card Basics by Diana Ratliff
Our Feel Good piece is a poem
that reminds us that "life is not a race; do take it slower; hear the music --
before the song is over."
Well, enjoy issue #
110!
May you be happy, healthy and well
always!

AWARENESS
FOR SUCCESS
by Frederick Pearce
Every minute of every
day, various stimuli bombard your consciousness demanding to be heard and seen
and noticed - sights, sounds, smells. Your conscious mind can only take so much.
It must filter out most, so it can properly deal with the important stuff. But,
how does it decide what is important - to be let through - and what is
unimportant - and is to be filtered out?
This is the job of the
Subconscious. The subconscious mind decides what it thinks you want to see,
hear, feel, etc. and what it thinks you do not want to see, feel and hear. It
screens out, or 'switches off' the reaction of your conscious mind to those
stimuli that are not wanted. If you have ever tried reading with the radio on
and not hear the radio, you have experienced these filters in action. A certain
word on the radio suddenly interrupts your reading. Why that word, and not one
of the others? The interruption is usually caused by something in which you are
interested, or which you consider important. This also explains why working in a
noisy environment can be so tiring - your brain has to work overtime filtering
out all that unwanted stimuli - and why a mother can hear her baby start to cry
before anyone else can hear it.
If you can somehow inform your
Subconscious that something that wasn't important has suddenly become important,
the switch mechanism will be altered. What was filtered out will now be let
through, and the conscious mind will start to notice it. Sound peculiar?
Have you ever decided to buy a new car, and then suddenly started
noticing this same type of car everywhere you look? Why? Didn't those cars exist
before? Of course they did! You just didn't notice them. They weren't important
to you and your subconscious screened out that information. As soon as that type
of car became important to you, you started noticing them everywhere.
This shift in mental awareness can be used to build success. Make
a goal, decide it is a priority: give it emotional power by imprinting it on
your Subconscious. This is one reason that goals should be written down - that
aids the imprinting process. And why you should read your goals out loud and
check them on a regular basis. And surround yourself with pictures of your
goals. All this burns these goals into your Subconscious.
Now your
Subconscious will let you notice anything that will help you achieve those
goals, because the filtering mechanism has been opened up to let related
information through.
It's not true that opportunity only knocks
once. Opportunities are all around but they are getting screened out as being
irrelevant to your current goals, the more so if you do not have any goals at
all.
Set goals, write them down, read them out loud, stare at
them, dream about what it will be like when you have achieved them. Get them
into your Subconscious. In no time, your Subconscious will be making
opportunities and information available to achieve them.

Business
Card Basics
By Diana Ratliff
Are you wasting your most
versatile marketing tool? Whether you conduct business on-line or off,
there’s probably not another weapon in your marketing arsenal that’s as
affordable, as portable, as versatile, and as readily accepted worldwide as the
humble business card. Business cards are much more than a convenient means
to leave contact information. Today, a business card can be an ad … a
mini-brochure … a coupon … a discount card … even a phone card or CD-rom
presentation! Very often, your business card determines what (if
anything!) that your prospect remembers about you after your initial
meeting.
First and foremost, your card must be legible (no
smaller than 10-point type). The most common mistake in business
card design is overcrowding. The truly essential information on any card
is your name, your company name, and your primary phone number (which should be
in bold text, if other numbers are on the card.) Include your email
address and website URL if you can, but remember, a card that’s too crowded
won’t be kept or read.
An experienced and reputable printer should
also be able to advise you about ways to make your cards more memorable.
Ask your printer about printing vertically, adding a photo of you (or your
product), or printing complementary information on the back of your card.
A very effective strategy is to use fold-over cards to create
mini-brochures. You put your customary contact information on the front
and back of the folded card, and use the inside to describe your products and
primary benefits.
However, what you do with a business card (yours
as well as others) has far more to do with the sales you generate than your card
design. Offering your card with both hands, for example, is a simple,
no-cost strategy that still creates an enormous psychological impact.
Consider exchanging cards with like-minded entrepreneurs through business
networking groups. Introduce yourself with your card. Include your
card with all correspondence. Sign your name (or a brief message) on the
front of the card. Tuck your card into related books at the library.
Actively seek out ways to use your cards.
When you receive cards,
too, always treat them with respect (how would you feel about doing business
with someone who didn’t even glance at your card, but just crammed it into their
pants pocket?) Jot notes on the back of cards you’re given, such as date,
event, common interests, physical characteristics of the giver, type of
information you need to send, etc. Develop a system for carrying and
collecting business cards, and file them the way you remember them (by company
name, person’s name, or industry.) Then, follow up and stay in
touch. You’ll reap the
rewards.

"STRESS
BUSTER"
*******************************************
One
weekend my friend Sally, a nurse, was looking after her six-year-old nephew when
he fell off a playground slide and hit his head.
Worried that he
might have a concussion, she checked him all night. Every hour, she'd gently
shake him and ask, "What's your name?" Soon, he began moaning in protest each
time she entered the room.
When Sally went in at 5:00 A.M., she
found something white on his forehead. Leaning close, she saw a crayon-scrawled
message taped to his forehead.
It read: "My name is
Daniel."

A
little girl was wearing one of those Medical Alert bracelets. Someone asked her
what the bracelet was for. She replied, "I'm allergic to nuts and
eggs."
The person asked, "Are you allergic to
cats?"
The girl said, "I don't know. I don't eat
cats."

don't like to face problems head on. I think the best way to solve
problems is to avoid them. This is a distinct philosophy of mine. No
problem is so big or so complicated that it can't be run away from! -- Charlie

----------------------------------------------
My
Dad and I were talking the other night about love and marriage.
He
told me that he knew as early as their wedding what marriage to my Mom would be
like. It seems the minister asked my Mom, "Do you take this man to be your
husband." And she said, "I do."
Then the minister asked my Dad, "Do
you take this woman to be your wife," and my Mom said, "He
does."

"FEEL GOOD
CLASSIC"
*************************************************
According
to the email message I received, "This poem was written by a terminally ill
young girl in a New York Hospital. It was sent in by
a medical
doctor."
I don't know how true that claim was.
But the
poem strikes me as sensible -- a wake-up call to people like me who don't have
time to smell the roses.
So, go ahead, and read
it.

SLOW
DANCE
Have you ever watched kids
On a merry-go-round?
Or
listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's
erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You better slow
down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't
last.
Do you run through each day
On the fly?
When you ask
How are you?
Do you hear the reply?
When the day is done
Do you lie in
your bed
With the next hundred chores
Running through your head?
You'd
better slow down
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't
last.
Ever told your child,
We'll do it tomorrow?
And in your
haste,
Not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship
die
Cause you never had time
To call and say,"Hi"
You'd better slow
down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last
.
When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting
there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an
unopened gift thrown away.
Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear
the music
Before the song is over.

"What
causes salespeople to forget their own successes and lose the skills that caused
them to be great?"
Dr. Norman Vincent Peale once said that a
problem contains the seed to its own solution. We can turn this meaningful
insight 180 degrees and say that every success contains the seed to its own
undoing. People often believe that success only breeds success, but more often
than not, success breeds complacency and arrogance and it can lower our
competitive drives. When success comes too fast, it often disappears as quickly
as it came. I remember a salesman who made $1 million in commissions only five
years ago. Last year he barely made $30,000. He lost his home, his family and
his self-esteem. Five years ago, hundreds of people listened eagerly to his
success stories; today only his creditors follow his footsteps. So how do
we keep repeating our successes?

What
Cross-cultural Training Can Do for You
By Brenda Townsend
Hall
International business is more complex than ever before. Success
in every sector is now seen in global terms. Yet success in working with
colleagues from different cultures is no easy goal. In order to connect, we have
to communicate effectively and we can only do this in an atmosphere of mutual
respect, understanding and trust. Cross-cultural training helps you understand
the underlying cultural values that drive behavior—you first understand your own
cultural background and then other people’s.

The
Chaos Theory of Careers: a user's guide
By Jim E.H. Bright
The
purpose of this article is to set out the key elements of the Chaos Theory of
Careers. The complexity of influences on career development presents a
significant challenge to traditional predictive models of career counseling.
Chaos theory can provide a more appropriate description of career behavior, and
the theory can be applied with clients in counseling. The authors devote
particular attention to the application of attractor concepts to careers.
