Mac McAnally Posts Tribute to Jimmy
by josh Sep 25, 2023

On his social media accounts, longtime Coral Reefer Mac McAnally posted a tribute to Jimmy:

Loss and gain

I am without words for about three weeks now. I usually have too many. The closest thing I ever had to a big brother left this world on Sept. 1. I’ve been comforted by so many beautiful tributes and am grateful for them. It is my intent to offer comfort and tribute in words and music for the rest of my life. I’m just slow getting up to speed. Jimmy would be laughing at me (or IS laughing) for dragging my feet.

What I can say in lieu of the right words that continue to evade is what an honor it is and has been to ride shotgun with a one man fountain of positive energy that saw fit to take me under his wing forty some odd years ago. And to the folks who only knew him from the stage or through the speakers I can tell you he was the same fellow in person that you saw and heard. Trying to help everyone he crossed paths with have the best day possible. Rich folks, poor folks, strangers and friends. Blue and white collars, all religions and political camps. He saw life as a gift to enjoy and his calling was to spread that joy. I’ve never seen anybody do it better.

Godspeed JB

Will Kimbrough Talks About Two More Songs on Buffett’s New Album
by josh Sep 26, 2023

Jimmy Buffett and Will Kimbrough worked closely on the upcoming posthumous album Equal Strain on All Parts and in an interview with AL.com, Kimbrough talks about two of the tracks: “Close Calls” and “University of Bourbon Street.”

“Jimmy wanted to write a song about his brushes with death,” Kimbrough said of “Close Calls.” “And so he told me a couple of stories and I sketched out a song. He changed some of the lyrics.” Buffett collaborator Mac McAnally also contributed, he said.

Kimbrough described the result as “a throwback to his early days, it’s a tongue-in-cheek fast country song, very country.” It features features Stuart Duncan, a Grammy-winning bluegrass fiddler. “It’s fun, it’s fast, it reminds me of something off of ‘White Sport Coat,’” Kimbrough said, referencing Buffett’s 1973 album “A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean.”

While Kimbrough didn’t reveal which incidents made the song, Buffett’s eventful life provided a few to choose from. A recent People.com story described three, including one that was the basis of the song “Jamaica Mistaica.” There was also that unfortunate time he fell from a stage in Australia.

“The University of Bourbon Street” also draws directly on Buffett mythology, Kimbrough said. He described it as “a story song about Jimmy’s early years in the late ‘60s in New Orleans, playing in a band on Bourbon Street.”

“And that song is great,” said Kimbrough. “It has the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, guesting on the song. What a thrill for me, a lover of New Orleans music if there ever was one, me, to have the Preservation Hall Jazz Band … trading licks with my guitar at certain moments in the song. [It] just gives me a thrill beyond belief.”

Kimbrough said the making of the song illustrates how energetic Buffett was during the recording sessions for “Equal Strain On All Parts,” held in January. He arrived on the second day of the sessions, after received a treatment for the skin cancer he’d been battling for several years.

Florida Lawmakers File Bill to Rename Parts of A1A After Buffett
by josh Oct 4, 2023

Parts of the iconic A1A highway in Florida may be designated as the Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway if a bill filed last week becomes law:

In the weeks since Jimmy Buffett passed away, there have been many tributes to the singer-songwriter. Now, one looks to trump them all, and it may become one of the most impressive honors to come to the musician following his death.

Fans of the legendary singer-songwriter may soon have the chance to cruise down one of Florida’s iconic coastal highways, which could be renamed for the late star. State Representative Chuck Clemons, a Florida Republican, has filed House Bill 91, seeking to grant an “honorary designation” to specific portions of State Road A1A in certain counties in the state.

If the bill is approved, the coastal highway, which stretches from Key West in the south to Fernandina Beach in the north, will be renamed the Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway. The name will take affect in a number of counties, including Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Nassau, among many others.
