Dynamic, small, national non-profit organization serving economically and socially disadvantaged children and youth seeking resourceful, energetic candidates with proven capacity-building and multi-tasking experience for the position of Executive Director.  Based in Bethesda, MD (suburb of Washington, DC), CORE: the Coalition for Residential Education’s mission is to promote and strengthen residential education programs for children and youth whose homes cannot meet their needs.

 

Residential education is an umbrella term for community-like settings where at-risk children live and learn together, outside their homes, within stable, supportive environments. Whether called a prep school, children's home, boarding or residential charter school, residential education is a viable and important option for thousands of children and youth. 

 

CORE supports the development of high-quality residential education programs through:

 

  • Advocacy
  • Professional Practices
  • Public Awareness
  • Capacity-Building through Collaboration
  • Information and Resources

 

 

The Executive Director has overall responsibility for furthering the mission and goals of CORE.  Working with the Board of Directors and CORE member residential education programs, the Executive Director is responsible for:

 

A.    Developing the mission, goals, integrity, strategic directions, and scope of the organization;

B.     Ensuring the financial stability and integrity of the organization, including the pursuit of public and private funding opportunities;

C.     Catalyzing and implementing CORE’s public policy agenda (largely federal and national, with some assistance at individual states);

D.    Overseeing the increase of public awareness and understanding of CORE and residential education;

E.     Continual improvement and expansion of a data base of promising professional practices and research on the field of residential education;

F.      Providing technical assistance to CORE member programs, initial direction to non-member founders of new residential education programs.

G.    Expanding the size of CORE’s national network of residential education programs, overseeing an increase in the number of CORE member programs and through retaining current members;

H.    Overseeing the development and implementation of CORE conferences, including at least one national conference per year in order to strengthen the field and individual residential education programs.

I.       Developing “win-win” linkages and partnerships with like-minded organizations;

J.       Overseeing the administration of CORE, including recruitment, hiring and supervision of staff, and financial matters;

K.    Developing and implementing special projects including projects deemed important to further develop the “field” of residential education; and

L.     Other responsibilities, as necessary.

 

 

We are seeking candidates with:

 

·         Excellent oral and written communications skills;

·         Minimum of  8 years experience in managing an organization or department, preferably a national organization or program, with at least two years of this at a national organization, and at least two years of this at a non-profit organization;

·         Master degree or more in a related field (social work, education, psychology, non-profit administration, association management, for example); 

·         Proven organizational/ programmatic capacity-building success; proven resource-raising success;

·         Ability to multi-task, be tenacious in the pursuit of CORE’s objectives and vision; and

·         Passion for improving the lives of economically and socially disadvantaged youth, and a strong belief in the potential of residential education to positively impact the lives of these youth.

 

Much of the work takes place in the CORE office, with some travel to visit member programs across the country, and to meet with legislators, donors, conferences, and other national organizations.

 

Salary range $85,000 - $90,000 plus highly competitive benefits.
