NPS proposes demolition of dilapidated structures within New River Gorge National Park & Preserve

FAYETTE COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — The National Parks Service has announced a public forum will be held to discuss the proposed demolition of deteriorating structures within the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.

The meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 10 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Bank of Glen Jean, located at 23 County Route 25/9 in Mount Hope, according to a news release from park staff.

The news release said demolition of following structures will be reviewed:

  • Brookside Pool Chemical Treatment Building
  • Charles Ashley Garage
  • Charles Ashley Outbuilding
  • Cochrane Farm Outbuilding No. 1
  • Cochrane Farm Outbuilding No. 2
  • Dun Glen Ark
  • Dun Glen Boat Storage Rack
  • Dun Glen Building
  • Dun Glen Mini Ark
  • Erskine Pugh Rental House
  • Harold Smith House
  • Harrah Coal House
  • Harrah Hen House
  • Harrah House Remains
  • Harrah Outbuilding No. 1
  • Harrah Outbuilding No. 2 Remains
  • Harrah Outhouse
  • Harrah Smokehouse
  • James Humphrey Senior House
  • James K. Carper Barn
  • James Phillips Farm Shed
  • James Phillips House

Park staff report 21 of the structures are "considered historic and are either listed, or eligible for listing, in the National Register of Historic Places."
