I worked with Don in Yosemite (1969-1971) and we have stayed in touch over the decades.

In 1984, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park celebrated its 50th Anniversary. Crowds gathered in a meadow in Cades Cove to hear the Knoxville Symphony perform using a temporary outdoor stage and acoustic shell. Governor Lamar Alexander performed during that concert as a piano soloist. Don Utterback patrolled on horseback.

Here is a digitized slide I took during that day of Don on patrol.

I am most saddened to learn of Don’s passing.

My condolences to all friends and family.

Don was one of those larger-than-life rangers, both in abilities and size, you are very happy to have as a  “backup.” He was among my favorite co-workers over the years.
Don, Rest In Peace.
