Shenandoah National Park temporarily closed to fishing amid dry conditions
HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - Shenandoah National Park has closed its streams and rivers to fishing, effective immediately.
The park announced its streams are experiencing low flows and high water temperatures due to dry conditions in the area, with some sections of the river completely dry.
Even though the area saw rain Wednesday, the park said water levels and river flow should would continue to drop with consistent dry weather. The park said these circumstances create “stressful conditions for fish, and dissolved oxygen can decline to fatal conditions.”
The closure on fishing will be lifted when stream conditions improved, though “stream flows are expected to remain low until significant precipitation occurs,” according to the park.
Shenandoah National Park has previously closed its streams and rivers for fishing in 2021 and 2023 for prior drought conditions.
