The Texas House is voting on HB1 TODAY. This is the budget for the next biennium 2012-13 that will take effect on September 1, 2011 and proposes draconian cuts to funding for essential services in our state, including public education.
Here is a list of 50 things that will affected by this budget proposal. With regards to public education, pay special attention to items 3, 29, 31, and 33.

To put things into perspective here in HISD, the district has outlined cuts to central administration (including over 200 administrative positions), the district general fund, and cuts of $275 to the PUA (Per Unit Allocation - basically, the amount each school gets per student to be spent on teachers, supplies, etc). If the legislature adopts a budget more closely resembling the Texas Senate version that is currently being discussed that proposes $4 billion in cuts to public education, HISD shouldn't need to cut any further from our children's classrooms. If the legislature adopts a budget more closely resembling the House version being voted on today, with $8 billion in cuts to public education, we could potentially see more cuts to funding in our classrooms.
To give another perspective, HB1 proposes a cut of 9% to public education, which is like cutting funding for a half a day of school
each week. Many legislators that support a "cuts only" approach to balancing the state's budget are putting a spin today on this proposal. They are saying it maintains basically the same percentage of spending on public education. However, what they are
not saying is that they are still proposing a staggering cut to the
actual amount of dollars spent on public education.
Please call your state representative TODAY, and ask them to vote against this bill because it cuts too much from public education. AND, please ask your friends and family, whether here or elsewhere in the state, to do the same. We do get a vote in this process, but only if we make our voices heard.
