Laptop or desktop for ParFlow?

Hello, I am Jooyoung Kim.
I have been using ParFlow since this January.

I have done some runs on a Windows workstation using WSL.
But during the runs, I learned that with WSL, I cannot use GPU acceleration and can only use the CPU for ParFlow runs. I may be wrong, but it seems like I need to use a native Linux Ubuntu OS rather than a virtualized environment like WSL.

Although I could obtain my results with the CPU, I still want to try runs with a GPU, even on a small scale.
And after encountering some obstacles with WSL, I am considering purchasing a new laptop or desktop and installing Ubuntu on it.
I am really interested in ParFlow, so I want to study it more deeply.
Currently, I do not have access to a Linux server.

What do you think about this idea?
Which do you recommend, a laptop or a desktop?
Or do you recommend just using WSL for studying this model?
How do you usually prepare runs and develop source code?

Hi,

I have not tried this myself but NVIDIA documentation indicates there is some support for CUDA on WSL.

The CUDA toolkit has a WSL-Ubuntu version:

What did you try that failed?   You will have to enable CUDA support when running cmake to configure the CUDA support in ParFlow, did that fail?

Is dual booting Windows/Ubuntu an option?   I do that a great deal to avoid the virtualization issues with Windows.

Thank you for your quick response.

I think dual booting will be a good option for me.

Because it has been a while since I encountered errors when trying to run ParFlow with a GPU in WSL, I do not remember exactly what caused the errors. I will check the CUDA materials you shared with me.
