How are you guys doing? I am a single parent and sometimes I feel
like I am not handling things right. Hopefully I can get some good
ideas here how to discipline and help my teenager. What do you guys
think. Is this a very good site for help? Let me know. Everyone
needs help some time or the other.

A little education can't hurt.
My confidence was tried by differences in parenting styles between my
ex-wife and myself.
She was a rigid disciplinarian. I tried to help my daughter take
responsibility for and solve her problems. Consistency was an issue.
I like to read. My walls are lined with books. One wall is devoted to
parenting books. There are many good ones.
Finding the right good one can be a challenge (there is the risk that
the books you are attracted to reinforce some of your parenting
"hunches" that may be counter-productive).
Having taking an online parenting class and a parenting class at a
local community center,
I would recommend a class that uses the "active parenting" curriculum
to EVERY Parent without reservation.
You can purchase the active parenting book, but the advantages of the
class include other materials; video (surprisingly humorous), lecture,
discussion, homework, role-playing that reinforce the lessons found in
the book. Probably the most important thing in the class? Support
from other parents who are there to do the right thing by checking
their effectiveness as parents against a proven standard. You can get
allot of advice in forums, from your friends, from books. But when you
come back to the second or third class after having experienced the
results of the homework assignments with your kids (they don't have to
know you're doing your homework) - and you report on your progress,
and you get the feedback - real feedback - real support - from real
people with the same concerns that you have - that's powerful stuff.
Another thing - no matter what your parenting style is - you can learn
allot from this class. I certainly did. I learned to develop the tools
that were working for me so that they were even more effective, and I
learned new methods. In the process I ended up learning more about my
child. You can read all you want about psychology - but until you
practice it, and see it working - consistently - well, maybe not you,
but I found that until i was helped to become aware of my mistakes,
and learned there was no shame in making and learning from them - I
don't know if I would have changed my methods that actually resulted
in almost immediate success. Everybody who stayed on in the class,
experienced positive results. This class gave me the confidence to
parent. I learned valuable things about myself that I would never have
learned by reading a book or by trying the advice from a newsgroup.

That said, I'd love to chat with you about your specific issues - and
share some of my own.

-darcy.

Please note: I am no way affiliated with "Active Parenting"
