Dear all,

I am Jane in New Jersy. I just got a big trouble yesterday.

My 18 yrs old son left about half hrs and let my 6 yrs old son stay
home alone. 6 yrs old ran out of house during the storm. a neighbore
saw it and brought my 6 yrs old son to police. Police said he will
notify child orgnization (I did not hear clearly) and probably will
charge the 18 yrs old son?

This really a big trouble? What we should do to avoid this trouble?

Thanks all for help in advance!

Jane

Well in all honesty the 18 year old was very irresponsible if he had
to go somewhere he should of taken his brother with him. Now he has a
child welfare organisation on his butt, and they are people who are
ruthless and take no prisoners. Plus he could have a record. He is 18
so he is legally an adult, so not much you can do other than pay legal
bills and tell him how much hot water he is in.

Now I am wondering why you are taking the fact that your 18 year old
son left his 6 year old brother alone, so lightly. I would be telling
the 18 year old that he had better be pulling his head out of his butt
and start making better decisions and being more responsible.

An 18 year old needs to understand that actions have consequences and
yours does not. He learned that is is not responsible for what he
does from you because you say that YOU got into big trouble when, in
reality, it is your son who is in big trouble. One way he'll learn is
to let him suffer the consequences of leaving the six year old home
alone. You need to reassess your role in this too. Did you give him
a job that was beyond his ability? Did he have some other
responsibility that allowed him to think he'd be better off leaving
the youngster?
