I have been trying to advocate for mustangs the last five years or
so. Sending e-mails, signing petitions, forwarding information about
BLM policy... you know the stuff. In the last five years I have
watched the mustang numbers dwindle to where they are now listed on
the the albc critical list. The wild population is now so sparse and
distributed over such a wide area that it is essentially no longer a
viable breeding population. So with that in mind, just wanted to
throw out there that there will be a BLM auction in Bloomfield IA.
April 20 and 21. There is currently an on line auction taking place
and the BLM will deliver to Bloomfield since there is an auction
scheduled there. Would love to see a good Parelli showing. Mac, my
husband , will kill me if I bring home a 'stang. I'm meeting Jackie
there and she will be trying to talk me into adopting one.... so it
should be entertaining!

Any way to preview horses before they arrive?

Not that I know of, but if you go the current internet auction you
will find contact people for the different areas, such as Burns Or or
Litchfield CA etc. Then you can contact them and ask for specifics.
I am starting to get a chip on my shoulder with the BLM staff. It
seems to me they used to be far more helpful, but perhaps my
frustration is tainting my attitude. Far more mustangs seem to be
making their way across the border to mexican slaughter houses. One
article I read said that there was a semi load of mustangs that showed
up in Mexico and they hadn't even gotten a freezebrand, which means
they bypassed all regulatory over sight. At my skill level I am only
looking at yearlings, but I do hope a lot of Parelli people do show
up. It will be an educational get together at the very least.

Tell you what, I will get some e-mails out and see if I can scare up
some information and get it posted here.

Okay I have an e-mail out and we will see if they get back to me. But
in the meantime, here is a look at what you might be finding. I think
this little guy is very impressive. I really like the look in his
eye.

Read over the adoption requirements. You will need some particulars
when it comes to fencing.. BLM recommends that you use a pen of 20x20
feet to start with. A one or two year old only needs a five foot
height. Older horses need six foot. (if I am remembering correctly)
and you need to have a covered area for them but it doesn't have to be
a full fledged stall shed or run in. They want you to transport them
in stock trailers instead of enclosed trailers as they do better
seeing what is going on. They prefer that the trailer not have a
ramp. The requirements for adoption are on the site and are
downloadable. I haven't read over them in quite awhile so you might
want to do that.

The horses most likely to end up in slaughter and not adopted are the
ones they refer to as "plain brown wrappers" like the picture I
posted. Personally I have a soft spot for the plain ones.
