Here are 3 books that may be helpful: A Terrible Thing Happened by Margaret Holmes; The Invisible String by Patrice Karst; and Tear Soup: A Recipe for Healing After Loss by Pat Schwiebert (also a DVD).

PARC friends, two questions:

·        Can anyone suggest a familiar children’s song or alternate tune for singing The Doxology (not the Old 100th or traditional version?

·        Children’s book recommendations for children who are grieving. The person requesting did not say from death of a loved one, but think this may be the situation and possibly even more traumatic since they are reluctant to give more information (a suicide?)

Thanks for you help!

Regarding the Doxology, I love the Avery & Marsh tune in the blue hymnal.  All these years later, I can still hear my son’s 4-year-old voice singing the Amen.  The Avery & Marsh Gloria Patri uses the same Amen.

There is a bibliograph of books on grief and loss for children and youth at the Cooperative Children's Book Center via University of Wisconsin-Madison, some of which might be helpful. Link is below.

Since you're not sure of the nature of the grief, you may also want to suggest The Centering Corporation as a source for books specific to grief from a wide variety of causes.

Westminster Presbyterian Church's library catalog has "Pathfinder" (bibliography) of Internet sources for materials related to grief. Centering Corporation is listed there along with several other sites to which I've referred over the years.  Many of the titles on their site are also available through Amazon.com, where you may find comments from other readers.

One children's book that has been extremely popular at Westminster is
Don't Despair on Thursdays: A Children's Grief Management Book, written by Adolph Moser ; illustrated by David Melton. (Kansas City, MO: Landmark Editions, 1996)
"Examines, in simple text with colorful cartoon illustrations, how to deal with feelings of grief when people or pets die, or when friends move away. Moser offers practical approaches and easy-to-follow methods that can be used day-by-day to cope with the pain of loss."
Unfortunately the book is out of print, and many used copies have outlandish prices. The book has been widely held by libraries throughout the country.  Check to see if your public library owns a copy or can borrow it through their Interlibrary Loan service. Copies may also be available in your public schools. It's part of a set of seven titles written & illustrated by Moser and Melton, one for each day of the week. All are very popular with kids.  The style of this book is so different from others that it may appeal at a time when others don't.

Also, don't forget to search Storypath under "grief."
