TheBest Units Guide has been developed by the Guild as your one-stop shop for the most interesting and engaging broadening units and electives at UWA. Units have been categorised based on which degree-specific major discipline they belong to. Depending on your course, units may fill the requirements for broadening units or electives. "It was fun, interesting, about pop culture so you write essays about movies music and subcultures. Theres no exam, you get participation marks for talking in the tutorial, the assignments are all essays (1000 word essay, 500 word group project, 2000 word final essay)."

Student comments: "The content is super interesting for anyone interested in politics, Asian cultures and history, or just understanding how nations have shifted along the spectrum from totalitarianism/authoritarianism towards democracy and back, which is super relevant to the time we're living in, even outside of Asia."

"A lot of love and effort went into organising this unit. No lectures, just three highly interactive hours a week with really friendly and highly-skilled teachers. There's many opportunities throughout the semester (both in-class and online) to practise what you've learned and get feedback. In terms of time commitment - if you're looking for a pass, just showing up to class will do; if you're looking to achieve high marks and begin developing German skills for life, so many extra exercises and resources are provided for you to work towards that. The exam is quite fair - it assesses nothing but the basics you learned in class."

Student comments: "A very interesting unit that offers an insight into the broad field of linguistics. It offers many opportunities for you to test your understanding of the concepts and apply them to real-world scenarios: engaging tutorials run weekly, short online tests run once every two weeks. Don't get your anxieties - or hopes - up though, linguistics won't teach you how to speak every language in the world (you WILL however learn, why such a 'cheat code' isn't possible) or give you a massive book on the definitively correct way to speak English (you WILL however explore, what 'correct' means). If you've ever been interested in unpacking the peculiarities of language, definitely jump on board!"

Student comments: "Learning another language is made very easy and enjoyable by Anna! I especially loved the culture lectures and learning about Spanish culture, it made me desperate to travel to Spain!"

"It was such an informative class and I think that a lot of people could get a lot out of it. I also think it covers the really important basics of feminism, gender theory and other history/ theory that is especially relevant today."

Student comments: "Assignments are mostly up to your own interpretation and the manner in which you engage with the content is almost entirely up to you. Getting to learn about other students and how the readings relate to their lives is interesting as well."

"I would almost go so far as to say that all students should be required to take this unit. This unit serves as a brilliant introduction to basic argumentation- how to read, organise and construct different types of arguments and introducing several basic logical structures. Despite not studying philosophy any further, the skills I learned from this class have been invaluable to me, both at uni and in my every day life."

Student comments: "This unit is an excellent blend of moral theory and real world issues. Considering and debating issues around euthanasia, disability and abortion, were fantastic opportunities to explore real world issues and gain a thorough and respecting understanding of sensitive topics in society."

Student comments: "The workshops are extremely engaging. The unit is fascinating, explaining the advent of modern courts and policing, it gets into serious questions about the nature of crime, and how it is defined. Class debate is encouraged after analysis of the primary sources introduced in each workshop. A really interesting unit, delivered by a true professional who is an expert in the subject matter. History students, as well as Law or Criminology students would especially benefit from taking this unit."

Student comments: "Fascinating content (covering thousands of years of history in one semester) and very engaging tutorials where we often reflected on broader themes by focusing on specific artefacts/cultural objects."

"Kate made the unit, she was amazing and very funny. This units so interesting as it provides you information of real life laws that affect you. The only downside were the lectures as there were so many questions asked. But other than that super easy unit and loved it."

"This unit was so engaging and taught me so so much about basic law that is super handy in my life as a fresh 18 year old. I recommend this unit to anyone thinking of doing law or not interested in that career at all. super interesting 10/10."

Tutors are very nice, making it easy to contribute in tutorials (participation was based on attendance, total of 10 tutorials). The mid-sem assignment was easy and had a lot of creative freedom, marking was fair. The lectures were pretty quick and easy to go through. Not sure how much of this will change with a new unit coordinator next sem/yr :( Overall low effort but interesting unit to take!"

Student comments: Very good unit that develops critical thinking, research capability, and development of reasoned arguments. Research proposal allows for in-depth exploration of a free choice of topic that relates to you. Awareness of music is necessary."

"If you like writing stories or poems or even songs, and want to create a polished creative piece in a highly interactive manner and an encouraging environment, I'd recommend this unit. It's really fun to talk about your work with other people."

"My love of creating writing and collaboration, as well as having enjoyed the first year unit version of this amazing course: reading creatively/ writing creatively. I highly recommend you join this unit with some experience/ high enthusiasm for creative writing, as there is not a huge focus for the basics of creative practise or writing exercises but more so that we analyse and talk about diff authors and genres each week. The group writing workshops were my favourite bc i got to share my work and get feedback on it!! and vice versa :)"

Student comments: "Fantastic practical unit which is brilliant for Archaeology and non-Archaeology students alike (awesome pick if you're looking for a broadening unit!) You explore experimental archaeology through different hands on activities each week and your assessments work towards creating your own replica artefact. Really interesting topics, great lecturers and very satisfying to submit your artefact at the end of semester."

Student comments: "The content is really easy, and you gain a lot of important information into understanding Aboriginal Australian culture, the Government's policies on Aboriginal people and the opinions of your classmates on the topics."

"It is so well organised! There are a tonne of practice questions and practice exams available and they are all very relevant to the lecture content. There are also extra optional lectures where you can have your questions answered or get extra help."

"For any math lovers who enjoys a challenge, STATS1520 is an amazing unit. It requires a lot of practice but both the lecturer (Marty) and my tutor Michael were great at delivering the content and making it as interesting as possible."

"Super easy HD with a little of bit of maths."

Student comments: Difficult unit but extremely rewarding because it helps you develop your critical analysis skills. Interesting content and relevant for daily life. Lecturer encouraged us to think outside the box."

Student comments: "The unit itself is quite up to date in what is considering a very fast moving digital industry. By learning and being able to apply digital marketing frameworks with a business in the real world, it made for a very fun and enjoyable experience!"

"Very applicable in the current climate, explains the complexities in the global transition that will be occurring over the coming few decades. Very limited prior knowledge needed before and no math."

Student comments: "It's very easy if you did some basic math and physics in HS. Rocked up to tests without watching any lectures, only skim through lecture notes and scored HD. No exam, 3 tests each has 15 MCQ, all from assignments. Labs are easy 90+."

Student comments: "This unit is incredibly interesting whilst being fun at the same time. A third of the time is solving secret messages and another third teaches how to win at games. In general very easy to grasp content."

Student comments: "This unit was absolutely amazing, the content is very interesting and entertaining and I would recommend it for anyone who has a free elective spot. It has no prerequisites but STAT1400 is recommended, although you don't really need to do it, it won't help much. You can easily do this unit with no stat or programming knowledge. Therefore I highly recommend it for anyone with a free elective spot."

Student comments: "This unit prepares you incredibly well for real work in applied statistics and data analysis. The assignments are like real-world projects that working data analysts might take on, and you gain valuable skills in R and LaTex/Markdown text formatting. Dr Khan is a dedicated and helpful teacher, I highly recommend the unit for anyone interested in applied statistics or data analysis."
