Direct drive motors remove the need to use an elaborate system of cogs. This means that the full power of the motor goes straight into the pulling mechanism, making it an extremely efficient motor. Without the extra mechanisms, it also has a very low sound output comparatively to other methods.

Tubular motors are the most common place motor for roller garage doors and shutters. They provide a durable, fast and quiet solution for both light and heavy applications. Tubular motors can be plugged into the mains through our easy fit panel to give you low voltage at the key switch or are backed up with battery power. Additionally, we provide garage door automation for sectional and balanced doors.
Fire shutters from HVP are designed to automatically close in the event of a fire. They seal off the opening they sit over and prevent the spread of fire. Our fire shutters have a rating of 1 to 4 hours.
The main purpose of a fire shutter is to prevent or slow down the spread of fire. In addition, it can also be used as a security shutter. Fire-shutters from HVP have a solid lath and are similar in appearance to our Screenguard security roller shutters.
Note: the product specifications below are based on our products range and do not reflect on products available throughout the industry as a whole. FireGuard FS50 and FireGuard FS75 are our product names for fire rated rolling shutters as manufactured by a select number of manufacturers who manufacture for us and are a recognised UK manufacturers of quality fire shutter products. All our fire resistant rolling shutters are manufactured in accordance with the construction products directive 89 / 106 / EC and the E C machinery directive 2006 / 42 / EC.
Fireguard FS50 shutter - With a smaller head box size, typically 250mm to 300mm square, the FS50 is ideal for openings such as food serveries, receptions, etc, where aesthetics plays an important part . This is achieved because the shutter is powered by a tubular motor fitted internally into the overhead barrel assembly. The maximum overall size of a FS50 is governed by the lifting capacity of its motor, so typically, the maximum width is in the region of 4.5m, but again this will vary, depending on height. The shutter is powered down on activation from an external source such as the building fire alarm system. A maintained power supply is required at all times, therefore a battery back-up unit is supplied as standard.
Fireguard FS75 shutter - Designed for larger opening or where 'gravity closing' is required. The overhead barrel assembly is connected to a motor by a drive chain. On activation from an external source such as the building fire alarm system, the shutter gravity closes through the gears of the motor at approximately 100mm per second. The head box size is typically 350mm square with the motor box end extending back a further 250mm. See drawing section.
For the FS50 - The panel acts as an interface between the fire alarm and the operator. When the fire alarm is activated, it sends a signal to the audio visual fire control panel which will then start to flash, giving off an audio tone and activating the motor to power down the shutter to its closed position. A built-in timer allows the setting of fixed delay times from receipt of the alarm signal to motor activation.
For the FS75 - As above, but a signal is sent to the shutter solenoid release mechanism allowing the shutter to gravity close through the motor gears. The unit incorporates a Solenoid Battery Backup.
Back-up power unit if mains power fails under fire conditions. Also, when using the shutter under normal conditions, if there is a power failure, the battery backup unit can be used to open or close the shutter once.
Note: the unit will require a recharging period of up to 8 hours. The maximum stand-by period for this unit is 4 hours. Typical internal battery lifetime is 1-2 years depending on usage and operating conditions. Replacement batteries can be ordered when required. The unit must be plugged into the electrical mains at all times.
Note: Link up to the buildings fire alarm system must be carried out by the customer's alarm engineer. It is not the responsibility of the roller shutter installation engineer to make the final connection to the fire detection system. This is the responsibility of the fire alarm engineer. The customer is responsible for a fire alarm test being carried out to ensure that the shutter operates in a fire situation.
A roller shutter is classified as a piece of machinery and must be regularly inspected. A service engineer will not be able to sign off a shutter as safe unless they can physically check all overhead supporting components and mechanical release mechanisms. Suitable access must be 'designed in' by those designing and installing fixtures and ceilings.
Full width access will be needed for a motor or barrel change, and guides will need to be removed to repair curtain damage. HVP security Shutters Ltd. will not be held responsible for associated cost 'by others' in removing materials and fixtures to gain access to the shutter components.

Authorisation must be obtained from the relevant enforcing authorities/building control bodies. Closure in a fire situation should only be released by a heat sensor, such as a fusible link or electric heat detector in the immediate vicinity of the door. Closure should not be initiated by smoke detectors or a fire alarm system unless the shutter is also intended to partially descend to form part of a boundary to a smoke reservoir. Where fire shutters are used to protect serveries, it is assumed that the counter is composed of non-combustible material and the counter is of sufficient width to ensure that the bottom rail movement under heating cannot result in the rail overhanging the counter.
The structure supporting the rolling shutter must be a fire-resistant separating element (to BS476 Part 20, 21, 22: 1987), having a fire resistance greater than, or equal to, that required of the shutter itself. It also must be capable of supporting the shutter for the required fire resistance period without compromising the fire performance of the shutter. In addition, consideration must be given to the loads imposed by the various door-set components, i.e. endplates and barrel support brackets.
All electrically-operated and upward-lifting doors must have a suitable maintenance system in place and details recorded in a log book. Fire shutters are also often used to keep certain areas safe for people in the event of a fire; think of escape corridors in stadiums, shopping centres or office blocks.
Many fire resisting roller shutters perform a double function; as well as automatically closing in the event of a fire, they are used as everyday security shutters, very similar to our Screenguard roller shutter.
