Hi Tucker,

You mentioned before that you experimented with the release process on github, implying that you may be considering opening up development.

Is this still the case?

Needless to say, 'lots' of people would be interested in seeing Parasail peek its head out of the AdaCore cocoon!

Best,
Conrad

Hi all,

To answer my own question again:
I made a repository of the Parasail 8 release files at https://github.com/hengestone/parasail_unauthorized

As mentioned in the Readme, I believe doing this is permitted by the licensing of the files contained in the release, GPLv3 for the compiler and "As is no warranty" for the standard library.

The aim is to try out the language and make it work smoothly for my environment. Contributions are welcome in light of the (hopefully temporary) lack of an official AdaCore repo.

Best,
Conrad

Great!  There is a new version of ParaSail in the final stages of release, so hopefully we can figure out how to reflect that in your github repo as well.  Internally I am still in the Stone/SVN age, but I am slowly (and somewhat painfully) being dragged into the "GIT" era.

Hi Tuck,

That's great news, being fully cognizant of the difficulty of adopting different tools and what not.

I'd be happy to help if you have any questions. Perhaps setting up a read-only mirror of the SVN repo?

One suggestion I have on the legal side is to look into having a more definitive license on the standard library files. For the Crack language (http://crack-lang.org/) that I was involved a few years ago we settled on the Mozilla Public License - see e.g. https://opensource.org/licenses/MPL-2.0

Take care,
Conrad

The forthcoming release has a more permissive license on the ParaSail run time.

Is the GCC_RUNTIME3_1 the more permissive license on the ParaSail runtime?

Yes.  The sources for the interpreter now include this addition:

-- As a special exception under Section 7 of GPL version 3, you are granted --
-- additional permissions described in the GCC Runtime Library Exception,   --
-- version 3.1, as published by the Free Software Foundation. See           --
-- documentation/COPYING3 and documentation/GCC_RUNTIME3_1 for details.     --
--                                                                          --
-- In particular,  you can freely  distribute your programs  built with     --
-- the ParaSail, Sparkel, Javallel, or Parython compiler, including any     --
-- required library run-time units written in Ada or in any of the above    --
-- languages, using any licensing terms  of your choosing.

Take care,
-Tuck
