Hello All,
Currently I am in thailand. Today we towed my friend Veso above an international Kitesurfing competition here where he did an impressive Acro display. Congrats to Veso who just got sponsored by red bull. He has been a Sol sponsored team pilot for many years and visited Pakistan Skardu region for the first time last year. Veso will be flying with me in May and June. Our plan is to visit Chitral and Booni where I was not able to spend much time last year. We hope to support the local pilots there with training and instructional tandem flights.
So the purpose of the message is to address some things that I've been slow to respond to. Forgive me it's just difficult to plan when I'm engaged in the present moment and the future seems so far away.
My Plans- Here in thailand towing with paragliders until mid April. Then back to US to process my tourist visa and come to Islambad then Chitral the first week of May. This may get delayed depending on visa application time. I will be in Chitral and Booni with Veso and his team until 1 client comes in June. This is a special client who I've done really nice bivy flights with in Nepal and India the last 2 years. It's his lifelong dream to do vol bivouac in Pakistan and since I know his level I'm hesitant to open it up to other pilots of different levels. I'm not totally opposed to it but I will need to interview any potential clients and make sure it's a benefical arrangement for everyone. Please send me a private email if interested.
That being said as we all know a lot of paragliding is waiting for the right conditions or doing local thermal and xc flights when the conditions aren't perfect for the big ones. I understand there is a group of Pakistani pilots living abroad who are planning a trip this year. Last year I made a plan to fly and train Pakistani pilots from Lahore and Islambad with the understanding that when the conditions are epic I would not be able to make a commitment to stay with them. I intend to do this every year and I encourage other visiting foreign pilots (even if coming for the first time) to team up and mentor the lower airtime pilots living within or outside of Pakistan. So I really hope to meet and spend time with all of you chasing your dreams of flying the most amazing place in the world.
For the Chital Booni pilots I am discussing with Veso putting on a Thermalling XC clinic for the experienced pilots I've known before. I am not interested to put on a basic course. We can talk about the fundementals of instruction as I know your already doing basic training. I think the timing for this we can schedule 3 days the end of May. I'm open to your feedback and ideas.
For other foreign pilots visiting this year I encourage you to connect and support the Pakistani pilot community. I am sure the relationship you build will be a highlight of your trip. The training given can simply be, coordinating flying at the same sites at the same time, sharing a ride to launch, discussing weather conditions and safe areas to fly, then meeting in the evening for dinner and debriefing the days flights.
So a couple preparation issues.
1) Oxygen- Who wants a system and please include dates of travel. Will it be for Solo or tandem use, note the tandem setup is a second Pulse dose meter and nasuale cannula but can be use as a solo system as well. Either 1 or 2 litre bottle's availble. Solo rental is 200 euro tandem is 250 for the duration of your trip. Includes use of manifold for filling which can be done in many towns in the north and also spare parts should anything need replacing during your trip.
2) Heli Bond- I gotta admit Askari holds all the cards so I'll play their game and again put up $10K of my money for the heilbond. I would like to rework the mountain rescue system in Pakistan thats too big a projects, hopefully PAFF and other groups with pressure positive change in the future. I'm doing this because a client is coming and I need the piece of mind that everything I can do I will. I can put multiple names on this bond just like any mountaineering expedition does. For that the most important is that you each carry rescue insurance which covers Helicopter in Pakistan. Charge is nominal at $100. I will need a copy of your passport and insurance information emailed to me. This helped a lot with Daniel's rescue last year that I could get on the internet and have his information available on my smartphone.
Lastly there was some discussion I didn't respond to about preparation. Cold is normally a bigger problem than hypoxia so have good gloves and practice flying and groundhandling in them before you come. Don't use any kit that you haven't trained with. For advice about developing as a paraglider pilot I have a lot to say but nothing that hasn't been said before. A couple good articles by Dixon White are here

Know this, if I meet you and your preparation on launch and groundhandling skills are not totally dialed in to whatever light/strong wind/difficult takeoff your presented with then our relationship will end before it starts. There is a lot you can do right now to prepare for this trip. If it's unflyable then go kite, practice no wind forward launch, on sled ride days walk up that hill and nail your spot landing in tight spots or just simply unpack and repack your kit until it becomes and ingrained habit.
Mental skills- I just bought Bruce Goldsmiths SIV bible and his introduction on our reaction to stressful situations is awesome. I can copy and send it to anyone who doesn't have access to an ipad. Basically learn about yourself and how you deal with stress even in non flying conditions will improve your flying.
So again, sorry for delay in response. I think you can tell I'm getting excited and looking forward to the trip this year as I know all of you are. Good luck preparing!
