While he waited for a reply, he continued to look over the anomaly data that was
coming in. Kylee was nearby, hopefully looking over the same data. This
alternate matter, which still detected as Anti-matter without the ensuing
explosion was fascinating, and a bit disconcerting.
Kylee furrowed her brow as she ran her tricorder up and down Jinx as he sat
quiet on a chair. She tried not to meet his eyes as he stared at her, finding it
unnerving. She moved over to her PADD, studying the data. "It still reads as
anti-matter, but.. there are very very minute changes, mostly the portion that
would react with our matter, the break down at the molecular level at the rapid
explosive pace."
"D-d-doctor Blake here. How can I help you, Justin?" The doc sounded badly
rattled which was very much out of character for her.
"We have some information you may wish to explore about our alternate selves,
how to detect them, and maybe with that data you can find a way to block the
dreams." Justin said. He kept it simple and direct. If something was up in
Medical, he didn't want to add to it, or give too much information away.
"We're on our way." Cait replied before cutting the com.
Justin tapped his comm. to close the channel, and went back to his scans.
Something was up with the Doctor, and it was likely they would soon find out.
"She said "We're"... as in We are." He reached under his console and took out a
palm-phaser, used mostly by those who had to travel covertly, and slid it into
the sleeve of his uniform.. not that it hit much, but it kept it
handy while he worked.
Kylee glanced over to Justin, letting out a soft sigh. "It seems another is
beginning to lose control," she said, watching Justin as he slipped out the palm
phaser, hoping it would not come to that. She collected her PADD and tricorder
and slipped them out of the way. She had no weapon, but she figured she could
handle herself if she had to. "Jinx, I want you to stay back if anything
happens," she instructed, drawing a nod from him. Justin continues to check his
readings and co-ordinate the incoming data. "Readings are higher near sickbay at
the moment."
"So, that means that we're going to be dealing with the more psychotic Cait.
Should I make myself a bit scarce before she enters?" Kylee asked, not going to
abandon Justin, but it might be best not to have both of them in the same room
at the beginning.
It didn't take long for Cait to reach Justin's location. As she stepped in, she
moved to one side revealing a perfect copy of her self except the copy had long
curly hair. Cait was still pretty pale but she didn't seem scared.
"This is...Anna. My counterpart's twin and thankfully not like her in the
least." Cait looked at the other two. "So, what have you found?"
Justin's hand reached for the phaser, then stopped as Cait introduced Anna.
"Well, first off we have detected what scans as antimatter but it doesn't react
like antimatter. With this we may have a way to detect what is going on. The
last big concentration is in sickbay, about 10 minutes ago." He eyed Anna "Looks
like we may be on to something."
Kylee moved for the door, stopping as Cait entered. Jinx stood up quickly as he
spotted the woman, moving to step in front Kylee, pushing her back. "Oi, ya be
stayin' back, ya.. ya psycho doc!" he ordered.
Kylee sighed grabbing the collar of his shirt and yanking him back. "Sit back
down in the chair and stay quiet," she instructed, before her eyes turned back
to Cait, studying her, then her twin. "Apparently you are known in the universe,
and part of that world came to pay a visit to you as well. Hmm.. so far only an
influx, not anything vanishing, at least from preliminary scans."
"I hadn't thought of that..." Justin turned back to his console a moment and did
a life form scan "We are currently minus 4 life forms on since the last scan. I
know of at least 2 additions..." Nodding to Jinx and Anna "so that puts us as 6
people missing, at least. All Starfleet officers are accounted for currently,
according to the communications system tracking data, that means at least 6
civilians are missing." He mutters "One more thing for them
to hate us for if we can't solve this."
Cait ran her fingers through her hair in frustration. "I can now tell when an
event is occurring but I can't predict when they'll happen. There has to be
something missing in the data or I'm just not seeing it."
"I..Can tell when my twin is about to try and take over Doctor Blake. She got
most of the empathic ability it seems but I've always been able to tell things
about her even though we're very far apart." Anna looked around at the others.
Kylee furrowed her brow at the news. "So, we only have civilians vanishing. Is
that due to the location they are in? Those missing, are they from the same part
of the city, or reported in the same location before they went missing?" she
asked, grunting as Jinx kept grabbed her arm, staying behind her as requested,
but prepared to pull her out of the way if need be. The man continued to eye
Cait warily, not willing to accept this was not the doctor from his
universe.
Anna looked at Jinx and rolled her eyes. "If that was Doctor Brody from our
universe, you would already be down on the ground with her boot on your
throat or writhing in agony from whatever new disease she'd engineered."
"I could talk to people who come to the clinic. See if any of them are
missing someone or if they've heard about someone going missing." Cait
looked positively ill at Anna's words and kept a tight hold on her shields.
She did not want to inflict this on anyone else.
"That would be good Doctor. I am showing a path... it seems the cavern we
opened up to save the miners is acting like a wind tunnel for these
particles. I suspect the missing people are miners, those who have gone back
into the mines since they reopened." Justin said. "Look here at the screen."
He brought up the flowing 'path' of the non-anti-matter particles. They
looked like a planetary gulfstream the way it moved over the colony. "Maybe
it is related to that anomaly we encountered during the rescue."
Kylee shook her arm free of Jinx, turning her head to look at him. "Relax
already, I'm not that other person. I can handle myself," she stated, before
she turned her gaze back to the others. "I am wondering if for every person
we gain, are we losing one? We've gained two people, and there is now the
new Lox, so that is three.. there is no other new people here?" she asked.
Her brow furrowed at the mention of the tunnel. "If opening the tunnel
caused the issue, would it be wise to close it back up?" she asked.
"I don't know if it will stop it, but it should, at least, slow things
down." replied Justin. "What do you think Doc?"
"What would happen to that flow if it can be closed? Are the particles being
drawn into the opening or pushed out? Cait asked as she looked at the scans.
Anna peaked around Cait to look as well.
"If the flow is restricted.. it will likely just shrink the field affected.
So, only those who probably go near the mines, if that is the source of all
this, would be the ones that would feel the effect. Though, with what
happened to those miners that had been trapped.. wouldn't we have noticed
something then when we extracted them, like extra people or something?" she
asked.
"Lox to USS Tempest." Justin tried contact the starship in orbit, maybe they
could get better scans.
"Commander Lox, this is Lieutenant Medson of the U.S.S. Tempest." The voice came
over loud and clear, a nice change and show of improvement in communications
over the last few months. "Is there something we can help you with?" They were
not expecting any communications at this time.
"Yes. Can you run a scan for anti-matter like particles and see if you can
give us a topographical chart of their movements. I say anti-matter-like as
they detect as anti-matter, but do not react like anti-matter." Justin
asked.
"Certainly" Came the quick response, "It may take a while to scan the whole
planet...did you have any specific area in mind?"
"Start with the colony and work outwards please. We think whatever it is,
is coming from the mines." Justin replied.
"Scans will take at least an hour. We'll let you know what we find
Commander."
"Thank you Lieutenant." Justin replied.
