The Free Clinic was scheduled for one of the more derilict sections of the city and there was already a line waiting as the medics set up the shelters. There was a definate air of tension about the area but no obvious signs of trouble. Cait stopped to speak with people she had been treating previously and generally making herself known to those who were here for the first time.
One of her medtechs began triaging, making sure the sickest were scene first as Cait headed on into the treatment area.
Yim'Bar and several of the Security department were nearby. Yim'Bar had taken to deploying very quietly whenever the clinics were going to be open, he had people stationed nearby ready to respond if an incident were to occure. They were lighty armed and dressed down in order to better fit. The teams were pairs of security personnel.
So far, since the hospital incident they had been uneccesary but Yim'Bar remained vigiliant, he wanted to make sure everyone stayed safe but no one felt threathened
As he inspected his officers he spoke to them, "Around the block is a clinic. We know this part of town is a little hot, stay alert but look like you are doing something friendly, pick up trash or something useful." The men looked at him and then slowly began to follow the orders. Yim'Bar decided to check the next team.
By now, the clinic routine worked like a well rehearsed ballet. They'd ironed out the wrinkles and could get patients in and out fairly quickly now. Some how, Cait managed to make each and every patient feel important and cared for.
As Yim'Bar walked the streets headed to team two, he glanced down the block. He saw that things were going smoothly as he passed, they were getting better at this and the civilians headed to the clinic were obviously becoming more used to the event. He passed an older woman, she gave him the look of 'outsider'. He smiled, "Have a nice day ma'am."
About midmorning, several youths got in line. The others looked apprehensively at the new comers and the tension in everyone increased.
The woman turned the corner headed for the clinic. Yim'Bar saw his team ahead and smiled. They were kicking a soccer ball with two boys. The boys were running circles around them. Yim'Bar approached slowly waving off the younger of the two officers who acted as if he was going to stop playing and start working.
He stood and watched for what seemed half an hour. He could not remember the last time he had seen boys having fun, never on Paradise, rarely in his postings since the Academy. He hoped this was a sign of things to come.
A rather seedy looking woman entered the clinic and started pushing past the medtechs and trying to get into the treatment area. The techs were trying to be curteous but it was soon evident, the woman wasn't backing down.
Yim'Bar decided to head back to Team One and insure their trash detail was coming along nicely. He knew they would be frustrated soon so he decided he would relieve them one at a time.
Things were getting loud when Cait stepped out of the treatment area to see what all the fuss was about. The seedy woman suddenly pulled a phaser out of her coat pocket and pointed it at the doc. "He controls her! She must be stopped. Rise up! Throw the shackles of Starfleet from your body."
People started screaming and trying to get out of the way.
Cait held her hands up and open and slowly shifted so that there was noone around her in case the woman was a really bad shot. "I'm not being controlled by anyone. I'm just here to make sure everyone gets the help they need, including you..."
Yim'Bar heard a commotion from the direction of the clinic and his heart skipped a beat. The noises this far away could only mean trouble. He looked at his team members and said "Take up positions behind that building, do not do anything unless ordered too, we need to handle this right whatever it might be."
He slwoly rounded the corner and walked towards the clinic. He saw a woman facing Doctor Blake with what looked like a Phaser in her hand. He began to shuffle his feet loudly as he continued walking in the direction of the two. He kept his eyes on the weapon and looked from time to time at Cait.
The doc watched the woman. She could hear Yim Bar's foot shuffling but didn't look towards him so as not to give him away.
The woman's hand was shaking. "I'm not the only one that's seen the truth! You come with honey coated words to take what we have poured our blood into. You take our future for yourselves."
Yim'Bar noticed that most of the attention was focused on the two women, it was a slight advantage. He stopped shuffling realizing Cait had seen him. He walked slowly but steadily in the direction of the lady with the phaser. He would time his presence as Cait spoke with the woman. He would surprise her with his presence.
Normally, Cait would be subltly projecting a sense of calm and caring at this point but given the recent paranoi about what Toby did, she wasn't going to take that risk. "Can we maybe find a quieter place to talk? I know you don't want to hurt any of your fellow colonists and there's a lot kids here today. We wouldn't want them frightened would we?"
"They need to hear the truth!" The woman shouted. "They should know who it is that is keeping them from having all the nice thing Starfleet has stolen from us!"
"What truth would that be? The free medical care perhaps?" Cait looked around, noting that all the attention was on her now. "These people can tell you that there is no charge for services."Cait gave a barely perceptable nod to Yim Bar.
"Is there something that you need specifically ,ma'am?" Yim'Bar said in his deep baratone. "I am sure that if there is a need that you have specifcally the federation, especially Doctor Blake will do all it can to make the provision. The federation personnel here in the colony live alongside you every day. We all share the same fate."
Yim'Bar hoped the distraction would give Cait a chance to put some distance between her and the armed colonist. He sloe hoped the woman did not blast him. But braced for that eventuality, anything was possible.
The woman turned slightly, recognizing the security chief from the hospital riot, her finger starting to press the firing button as Cait moved like a striking snake and got the weapon pointing to towards the roof.
Yim'Bar leapt forward as the woman began to depress the trigger as well. He began speaking as all security officers did as they engaged. He was amazed at the speed Cait exhibited and remembered that she was telepathic and figured she sensed the movement before it started. Yim'Bar went straight for the weapon hand of the woman. "Put the weapon down." he shouted as he grabbed for the hand holding it along with Cait.
The Phaser fired just missing Yim'Bar's left shoulder and impacting o na building i nthe distance. Rubble fell from the side of the building. The security offciers from Team One came around the corner immediately but were too far away to add to the melee.
Those in line screamed and started to panic, trying to get anywhere but in the path of that phaser.
Meanwhile, Cait was digging a finger into the pressure point on the woman's wrist, getting lifted off the ground. "Let...it...go!"
"The phaser is set for kill Cait. Be extremely careful" Yim'Bar stated. "Stop firing drop the weapon, ma'am." He continually said as he engaged the weapon hand. The phaser fired wildly into the air as Yim'Bar secured a hold on the woman's hand finally. Yim'Bar looked down the barrl of the weapon and saw nothing but colonists.
One of the medtechs came in from behind, pressing a hypo to the woman's back. The hand released the trigger and dropped the weapon as the fast acting sedative knocked her out cold.
It was an extrememly dangerous maneuver but he decided that he needed to get the colonist safe immediately. "Hold on to that grip Doctor Blake we are going for a ride." And he rolled to his left and away from the colonists gathered at the end of the phaser. Both the women rolled with him as they held their grips.
The phaser rolled away safely from the pile of Cait, Yim'Bar and the woman
Yim'Bar used his superior mass to further subdue the woman, he was probably crushing Cait in the meantime but it was unintentional and a secondary concern.
Somehow, Cait always ended up on the bottom. "urk....."
The woman went limp. Yim'Bar froze. He had killed the colonist with his bare hands. Panic raced over him in a flush. "Medics, get over here immediately and render aid to this woman. Now Now Now..."
The shock of the woman's apparent death was almost too much. The Hospiatal all over again..."No! You have to help her, now." He said and began to check her pulse and life functions.
The medic looked down at Yim Bar, hypo still in hand. "She's just sleeping."
"I..can't..breathe...." Cait gasped.
It was precicisely then that Yim'Bar realized why the ground was so soft when he rolled, he was on top of Doctor Cait Blake and had been crawling all over her while trying to render aid to the other woman. He jumped off the Doctor as if he had been caught with another man's wife...he had but not like that.
"Sorry Doctor, please let me help you up...are you okay?"
Team one had fully respondedto the situation and were moving close to their commander in order to make the official arrest. Team Two rounded the corner, the two soccer boys close behind.
Cait took the hand up. "Yeh, just slightly bruised." Looking around at the chaos, the doctor sighed.
Yim'Bar looked at the phaser on the ground and grabbed it immediately. He stuck it in his hidden pocket. Then he looked at Cait, "Please make sure the woman is okay. I think I might have rolled far too hard, I wanted to make sure those people were safe." He saud as he pointed to the massed crowd that had been the clinics line of patients
"Thanks for breaking my fall Doc." He whispered quietly.
"Thanks for saving my patients and staff." Cait whispered back. She pulled out her tricorder and started scanning. "Megan, let people know we'll be back tomorrow please. She's fine, Commander."
The Medtech nodded and went off to do just that.
"Can we do like a full work up on her and make sure. I would hate to take her into custody after that fall without knowing she is going to be okay. I have to take her to the detention facility but it would be helpful if we went via the Hospital." Yim'Bar said. "Chief, he called to the team One leader, signal for an emergency medical pickup so that we can get this woman the attention she deserves." He winked at Cait as he made the statement.
"I believe we can do that." Cait gave him one her smiles.
“Commander Blake’s office to Doctor Blake, the gentleman the Commander wants you to meet is here.”
Cait groaned softly. "I had forgotten about that." She hurried off, leaving her staff to clean up.
"Good job Doc." Yim'Bar said and followed the emergency team and his security officers to the hospital to insure their detainee made it there safely.
Cait stopped and looked at YimBar. "Not a chance. You're comeing with me. Someone has to explain this mess to the XO and I'm the one that has to live with him."
Yim'Bar stopped dead in his tracks. "Chief take this over, use the room designated for Security at the hospital, call the counseling staff for a full work up and keep her there, I will decide where we will keep her later. Looks like I have some explaining to do, don't wait up for me." Yim'Bar turned on his heel and followed the Doctor to his destiny
