"So, Tobias Blake. One of yours right? Married to Cait?..." the question
broke the silence after the issue with the Xeleucians had reared it’s ugly head.
Vin really didn’t need an answer to the question though, he knew the answer
already. Vin only asked the question out of courtesy but as he spoke it he
realised that stating the obvious in a questioning manner wasn't really
courteous at all so he pressed on.
"I have a number of
applications here from him, Liaison Officer, Counsellor and even XO as a
tertiary priority." the Captains voice lowered "sort of offended... XO as
tertiary... you'd think more people would be fighting for the position of
prestige" shaking his mutterings off again his tone once again became more
audible. "But, in any event... your opinions valued. Given his experience
as a counsellor and his obvious ability in empathy, I believe Liaison Officer on
this planet is probably the best position for him. The heavens know we
could use a peacekeeper."
“Toby is one of mine yes. He’s served
under me since his graduation from the Academy. He’s proven himself time and
time again.” She started then went on to answer his other questions, “Toby does
not seek positions of grandeur, Toby does his job and he does it well,” K`y then
went to explain further, “By that I do not mean that he does not deserve his
position in the command structure but that Toby does his job because he is good
at it, accolades are not why he does it. I believe Liaison Officer would be
befitting of his greatest strengths.”
"Done then. I'll contact him
as soon as possible and bring him up to date. It will be a very busy start for
him." starting to move on already Vin started looking at some of the other
Starfleet officers on the planet through the personnel listings on a PADD he was
holding in his hand.
“Of course Cait as the Chief Medical Officer
goes without saying.” He spoke her first name because he was very familiar with
her. Cait and Vin had spent time together at the Academy and then time
together in postings. In fact time in another life had a very different
path for the two, but only Vin knew of that life and he was glad he was no
longer in it.
“Hope she's up for running a hospital and not
getting her hands dirty as much. One of her first jobs will be to assign
the personnel underneath her to the appropriate sections. And she has to
liaise with development for her new medical facility. And she has to work with
assigned medical civilians...” Vin added with a impish smile another couple
of “and... ands…" to signify that the first few taskings were only the tip
of the iceberg. Noting that K'y was looking at him quizzically again Vin’s
impish smile faltered a little and then his countenance changed more over as he
had to stifle a rather phelgmy cough.
K`ylana nodded, there really
wasn’t more to add here. The decision had been made and it was a good one,
“She’s a feisty one and her only weakness is not knowing when to stop, Toby has
been a great help there to stop her as much as possible from running ragged.”
"Continuing" was the word mentioned in such a way that it seemed
rather harsh. But Vin was obviously more frustrated with his own physical
being than the beautiful presence in the room. "Does Saladin and Lox know
the difference between Operations Manager and Chief of Operations?" It was a
very pointed question, designed to have K'y assess the intelligence of her own
officers and at the same time their ability for the potential positions. Still
it was a retarded question, somewhat suck eggs.
There was a laugh,
“I believe Marcus does…Lox on the other hand is so very eager he can at times
overstep his bounds but with the absolute best intentions possible.” K`y mused
to herself in thought, and not always with the best results. “If you have a
problem Lox will fix it, I am not saying he will follow standards but he’ll fix
it.” She then spoke of Marcus, her demeanour slightly changed once more
when talking about him, “He is my third set of ears,” she said, “He has a strong
hold as to what is and isn’t being resourced on the Ridge and in instilling
limits where needed.” She was trying to be cautious to not show favouritism
knowing Marcus in a manner most did not. “He knows how to issue a challenge to
me without me knowing it,” she smirked, “You know I do not do well with
challenges, at least not publicly.”

"So Saladin can
make hard calls?" it was apparent that Vin was very interested in Saladin.
"Given a current situation we have I am beginning to think that he, that is if
he takes up this position will have to make possibly one of the hardest calls in
his career." it was unusual to see Vin like this, but it was apparent that grief
was actually starting to affect him. "Don't get me wrong, K'y. If Saladin
is up for the position, I will back his decision to the hilt, I think we all
want the best, but I am in fear of the worst."
K`ylana nodded, "He
can make tough decisions, he a methodological thinker but not to the extreme and
doesn't act on pure impulse which at times is beneficial and honestly grounding
for myself." She crossed her arms loosely and leaned back against the edge of a
counter, "You will back him up in terms of what he decides is best for the
region or in his overpowering a decision we make?" Her fingers brushed against
the fabric of her jacket, "My crew, at least those most trusted in high ranked
positions have served with me since the Audax, some as far back as the Erinys. I
trust them and their abilities without question. My senior staff has been hand
picked and while each does have their faults they are damned loyal. We have
served on planetary missions before and all have eventually become accustomed
to, lest be honest, lack of comforts that we are used to. We are in a precarious
position right now, the quake has certainly put us back a few paces; I am
hearing rumours of missing persons beyond what was originally speculated."
They were lost in thought for a while until Vin finally broke the
silence. "Get Saladin to see me as soon as...” shaking his head to get
himself out of the delusion Vin apologised to the demi-klingon Captain “sorry
K`y. You are not mine to command. I'll get someone else onto
it. Time is running out."
With that Vin looked up and
towards his doorway noticing two things as he did so. One was that his
doorway had no automatic shutting and two... that he was only now regretting
that there was not anyone working on anything in or anywhere near his
office. To be utterly blatant no one was around but him and K'y. "Damn
wish the communicators were working."
As if tracking Vin’s
thoughts Vilqa nodded as the silence was broken by the cardassian's voice,
"Forget automatic, how about simply closing and locking...." she trailed off and
waved the subject aside. This surprised Vin a little but the surprise
slipped away as his mind reasoned that it wasn’t uncommon for two people that
had worked together and known each other for a very long time to be aware how
the other one thought.
"Sorry K'y. We will have to finish
this later. I do need to track down Saladin as soon as possible, or at
least someone to track him down. Join me for food later? My wife cooks a mean
potato bake." Vin smiled wryly "Yes, that does mean a decided lack of
replicators here, but fresh food and the farming areas..."
"I will
consider it," K`y wasn't certain what her place would be within a family home,
"I had noticed the cooking apparatus in my quarters, it has been a long time."
"Well, I will try to explain later, as well as discuss with you
about the science and security positions. And try to find out if you know
anything about a Tari Adin. I made a promise to an old friend to 'bury her
in paperwork' because of some mischief she was involved in but I don't know
why?" the two Captains moved out of the Vin’s office to find people to command
while chatting about other matters.
"Tari Adin." There was
disdain in her voice but she said nothing else on the matter; that was the
cherry a top of the large 10-man sundae.... Tari Adin, once again they would be
face to face however revenge would need to wait. This mission was suddenly
starting to look promising and for the first time since K`y met up with Vin she
smiled as her thoughts raced.
