Jason entered the Hospital,
wondering what today would bring. Again he was dressed as nicely as he
could for duty since he was meeting someone new that he would be working
with. He asked the nurse behind the desk where Doctor Wilkinson was and
the nurse was able to direct him. Though he didn't run he did hurry
along, since he didn't want to be late.
< Kat's Office >
"Ma'am....there's someone here to see you."
Kat
looked up from the charting she'd been working on her brows furrowing
over her emerald green eyes at the interruption. "Oh?...I wasn't
expecting...." she said cutting off mid sentence when she caught sight
of an unfamiliar face at her door. "Thank you Diane.." she said simply
"He can come in.." she said with a warm smile as she moved the stack of
PADDs over on her desk and leaned back in her chair.
Jason waited a bit until he was
told he could enter, he took a moment to rub the slight ridges over his
nose. He smiled and thanked Diane before he entered Kat's office.
"Doctor Asburn reporting for duty... Doctor Blake wanted me to work with
you until I got a feel of the place," he said as he stood at attention,
though he did offer Kat a smile.
"Well its a pleasure to meet you
doctor...." she said offering her hand. "have a seat......what is your
area of specialty?" she asked curiously.
Jason shook Kat's hand before taking a seat, "No specialty, General practice."
Kat
gave a nod. "I've become a jane of all trades I think." she said with a
smile. "I am a surgeon, general and obstetric practitioner." she
explained. "I hope you don't mind expanding your horizons." she added
smiling again as she picked up a PADD and pulled up his file giving it a
quick once over. "Things are pretty quiet around here at the moment..."
she said knowing it wouldn't stay that way for long hopefully. "So
doctor...tell me a little about yourself...I see you're fairly new to
starfleet?" she stated wanting to get to know this newest member of the
medical staff.
"You're right I graduated not to
long ago from Star Fleet academy and this is my first assignment. I'm
half human and half Bajoran, but to be honest I don't know much about
the Bajoran side as my mother died when I was really young. Joined
starfleet to see the stars and see new places," Jason told her. He sat
back a bit in the chair as he spoke.
Kat continued to nod as she
listened to Jason. "Starfleet is definitely an adventure......was born
and raised around it." she stated just as Diane appeared at her door.
"Doctor?.....you have a patient in exam 3." Kat looked up and gave the
woman a nod. "Well Jason.....ready to get your feet wet...so to speak?"
she asked.
Jason smiled and got to his feet, "Lead the way..." He was more than ready to get his feet wet and getting started with things.
<exam 3>
Kat
stood up from her desk motioning for Jason to follow along while she
headed to the exam room, her nurse giving her a PADD with the patient's
information on it. Upon entering the room the two doctors would find a
young woman in her mid thirties and in for a routine exam. "Hello...I'm
doctor Wilkinson and this is my colleague doctor Asburn." she told the
woman by way of introduction while looking over her chart. "Would you
mind if he assists with your exam?" she asked the woman only to see her
shake her head."No...its fine.." she replied giving her full trust into
Kat's capable hands. Kat looked over the woman's chart before handing
the PADD to Jason. "This should be a routine exam." she tells Jason
offering to allow him to conduct while she observed.
Jason took the PADD and looked it
over before smiling at the woman, "Nice to meet you Jillian Canton, as
Doctor Wilkinson said I'm Doctor Asburn, but how about you just call me
Jason?" he asked as he moved closer to the one to start the routine
exam. It was clear to anyone with actual medical training that what
Asburn did was completely by the book, what one would expect from
someone fresh the academy, lacking experience.
Jillian smiled feeling a little
more at ease as Jason re-introduced himself and allowed his patient to
address him informally. Kat stood by watching, pleased that starfleet
had sent them someone with actual people skills. She handed Jason a
tricorder after making preliminary scans of the woman herself.
"diagnosis doctor?" she asked wondering if he'd happened to catch the
elevation in the woman's hormones indicating she was in the early stage
of pregnancy. This was not an uncommon occurrence for most of the women
that came to Kat for treatment. Kat had her hands full with both the
maternity and the emergency medicine departments.
Jason took
the tricorder and began to examine Jillian. While he did catch the
elevation in hormones he was hesitant to say anything right away,
worried that he might be wrong. He smiled a bit, "Pretty good, I am
noticing some elevation in hormones..." sounding unconcerned by that and
scanning a bit lower, "I dare say that the lovely Jillian is pregnant."
Jillian's eyes widened at Jason's
diagnosis, she glanced to Kat and then back to Jason. "What?.....are you
sure?" she asked looking back at Kat again. "Yes....doctor Asburn is
correct, your scans indicate that you are indeed with child." she tells
her gauging her reaction. "I take it this wasn't planned?" Kat asked
watching as Jillian shook her head. "Well that puts us in a fix now
doesn't it." she said. Jillian gave a nod. "Oh....don't worry
doctor...even though this comes as a shock...I do want this baby."
Jillian told her. Kat breathed a sigh of relief. "Okay well Jillian I
want you to come back in a few weeks for routine monitoring by either
myself or doctor Asburn here.." she stated turning to Jason looking for
confirmation in taking on the case himself.
Jason smiled at Jillian and nodded
to her that he was willing help taking on the case. He was also a bit
relieved that he was correct. "We will be seeing you soon Jillian," he
told her. Looking over at Kat, wondering if there was anything more they
had to do now.
< Kat's office >
Kat watched as Jillian made her
exit out of the office before she turned to Jason. "You handled that
quite well doctor...always nice to deliver good news isn't it." she said
with a smile pondering what would be next on her agenda. She finished
with the entries on Jillian's chart before pulling up her appointments
seeing that none were scheduled she would have time to grab lunch and
then make quick rounds in the ER. "So doctor.....it appears I don't have
anymore appointments scheduled...would you like to head back to my
office for a while before we do rounds in the ER?" she asked. "I can
have some food brought up or we can get something from the replicator."
she stated.
"I would like that. Had a light
breakfast myself." Jason told her. He waited for her to go first before
leaving the room, since she knew the place a lot better than he did at
the moment. He took a moment to adjust his uniform before stepping out
of the room to follow Kat.
Kat smiled warmly nodding for
Jason to follow her back to her office. She walked at her usual
sauntered gait adjusting her own tunic while she walked arriving back at
her office within a few minutes. "So which will it be replicator or
hospital cafeteria fare?" she asked after settling back in her seat
behind her desk.
"Given the choices... I think I
will have to go with... Replicator." Jason said with a chuckle as he sat
down in one of the chairs, relaxing back a little.
Kat chuckled softly giving Jason a nod. "Well in that case
be my guest." she said leaning back in her chair awaiting her turn with
the replicator. "So....any questions so far?" she asked allowing Jason
the opportunity to get to know her a bit as well seeing how they'd be
working together for a while.
Jason got up and moved over to the
replicator and got himself a tuna fish sandwich and an ice tea. Before
taking a seat again, "Nothing particularly comes to mind at the moment.
Though I am sure I will come up with a few questions later," he said as
he looked over at Kat.
Kat moved from her seat to take
her turn at the replicator. "iced tea unsweetened....garden salad bleu
cheese dressing on the side" she ordered watching as the items appeared.
Grabbing each item she moved back to her desk taking a seat a bit
surprised that he had no questions. Kat proceeded to enjoy her meal in
relative silence. Should doctor Asburn look around her office he'd find
that there really wasn't much around in the way of personal items save
for a couple of holo images, close friends of the lovely doctor during
happier times. "Have you checked into starfleet database for
information about the bajoran race?" she asked. "I know it wouldn't be
anything like learning about the heritage from family." she explained
taking a sip of her tea and setting the glass back on her desk.
Jason did his best not to get any
crumbles on him, after all it wouldn't do to get messy in front of the
lovely doctor. "I did a little research, but never got fair in it.
But... I don't know I would rather hear it from someone, not read it..."
he told her. He put the plate aside when he was done with his food, he
would deal with it later. He glanced down at himself just to make sure
his uniform was clean.
Kat thought for a moment taking
another sip of her tea and nibbling a bit more of her salad. "I can
understand how that could make a difference." she said watching him
smirking a bit at how careful he was being about his appearance around
her. "I'll see what I can do to help you with that.........that is if
you wouldn't mind." she suggested as she finished off her salad sipping
on the rest of her tea.
"If you think you can help, than
all means, I wouldn't turn it down." Jason told her, "I do want to learn
more about my heritage. Hope that it will let me get to know my mother a
bit more." He sighed slight but didn't let the sadness of not knowing
his mother bother him.
Kat smiled warmly as she picked up her dishes and set them on the
replicator watching as the vanished from view. "I'll see what I can
do.." she said with a wink ever so much the flirt regardless of rank.
Sometimes it was good to have connections in higher places. "Maybe we'll
look into holoprograms that might shed some light for you." she
offered. "plan to get together off duty to begin investigating perhaps."
she added as she picked up one of the PADDs on her desk. "Well doctor
if you're finished...... we can go make rounds in the ER."
Jason
got up and disposed his own plate and cup by putting them in the
replicator and smiles at Kat. "Definitely... we will have to check our
schedules to see where we can fit it in." He stretched a bit and looked
around a moment before nodding, "Can't avoid it, so let's go."
Kat
smiled again and gave a nod motioning for Jason to follow her,
sauntering passed the maternity department and towards the lifts that
would carry them down to the emergency medicine department.
