He hadn't stopped thinking about the miners.
Yes he had passed the task to the appropriate officer to make the recommendation
but that didn't mean that his involvement ended there. "Mr. Kerr, make an
appointment for those press to talk to us in say, 10 hours. I think I'd
best sleep before being set apon by those wolves."
"Yes Sir, may I say..."
"No you may not, however you can make sure that the
Liaison Officer, Commander Toby Blake is ready to first meet with the
press. I know there is still around 24 hours before Saladin is required to
pass his recommendation but we have to be on the ball with this one..." Kerr-ee
was not the best of clerks, in fact most of what he handled had to be corrected
by Vin a lot, but he could pass the buck, therefore pass messages on, like a
regular one man telecommunications network.
"O..."
The demi-cardassian didn't even let Kerr-ee finish,
instead his face spoke the simple words required 'Go NOW'. Kerr-ee wasn't
the best of clerks by a long shot, but that didn't mean he was stupid. He
went at the pace of a thousand gazelles.
Vin shook his head and muttered something about
needing to get better help around here before he turned back to the problem with
the miners. The press were going to ask a lot about that, a lot about what
Starfleet are doing for the infrastructure of the planet - as in preventative
measures, may even hit the question about Starfleet beating up some
civilians. Vin had hoped that Toby had taken care of that one. He
was getting a little stressed about it, but being a station... this is what
happens. They are much more in the public eye, he hoped not to
disappoint.
"If I focus on... no
that... damn." in the scientific mind of Vin thousands of scenarios
occurred. Problems were mainly the balance. Things were of too
little effort and would take too much time, or things were much too much effort
and would cause too much damage. Any sort of explosives solutions that he
could come up with were causing problems elsewhere in the dome. For
example the mountain above where the miners were trapped, loosened by the quake,
only created a couple of years ago... it was fragile. Not that it would
fall on and collapse over the miners, but may cause a rockslide like never seen
before. And since they actually lived in these sierras...
Too many factors where things could go wrong.
Were they worth the effort? Starfleet were heroes, but on this planet the
civilians were seeing nothing but men.
"In an environment recently created... everything
is about finding the right balance. How goes your balance my friend?" a
newcomer asked.
The grey skinned one looked up at the person that
intruded in on his privacy, his expression went from darker discolouration to a
wary even somewhat frightened overture. "D..Dr Andid. What brings
you here?" Vin summed up the courage to speak.
"Is that the reception I get, your counsellor for
at least two years now and I get a frightened macho man?" the last was a mite
bit sarcastic.
"Well Doctor, " Vin said with much more
confidence. "I will be honest, I thought you and I were
done."
"Not so much" was the Trill's reply asked he glided
absently through the office, swiping his fingers on a mantle before rubbing his
thumb and finger together and not being satisfied that he cleaned it enough,
then onto his pant leg. "We are close, but not quite."
Not liking the words he was hearing Vin started
partly shaking his head. "Jobel, you are the most unpleasant and rude
counsellor I have ever had to deal with. I thought that since you said, we
are pretty much finished and recommended that I get posted away from earth that
you would understand that I never expected to see your face again."
The trills looked in mock surprise. "You
seriously think that having a whole extra life rattling around in that noggin of
yours that you would have it easy after only two years of
counselling?"
"Well yes, you said..."
"Forget what I said Vin, I am here. Not
necessarily exlusive for you, but I am here. Your other life was quite
extreme. Yes I recommended posting, because you need outside pressures at
the moment to catch up and have to deal with everyday real life. Not that
otherwordly fantasy." Jobel scolded.
Vin acknowledged why he kept Jobel as his
counsellor, someone that was no nonsense. And didn't start ever believing
in Vin's other life despite the proof. "Well are we in
session?"
"No Vin. No more sessions unless you need
them. I am here only to observe you and monitor your performce, make sure
that you don't have any lapses." Jobel yawned. "Well I best be off.
I just thought I'd pop in and make sure I alerted you to the fact I was here
before I started making inquires about you.
The trill left as gracefully and as quickly as he
arrived, and Vin smirked. Somehow, despite his issues with that man, he
suddenly felt a little safer in his world. "Well then lets get back to
work and ignore that intrusion." Kerr-ee had just taken that moment when
Vin was speaking to himself to arrive back.
"Ah, get on to all sections to report in before the
press conference tomorrow. I need to look at there sitreps and work out if
I have any good news to report or I am going to be making
excuses..."
