the moss collected from outside from it's little area set aside in the
science lab. She could see that some of the fur was beginning to shed,
finding tufts of it in the cooled cage. "So.. what do you look like
under all that fur, huh Etc?" she asked, smiling and watching the
creature.
Max stepped into the Science Lab and glanced around, recognizing Kylee
immediately he strolled over. He stopped behind her and peered over her
shoulder into the cage. "What the hell is that hideous thing?"
Kylee turned her head, her brow arching slightly. "It's a ball of fur
and a tail.. how exactly is that hideous?" she asked. "And it's an et
cetera.. at least that is what I have named it.." she said, smirking
slightly, "There something I can do for you?"
"I heard you had some new specimens down here... although I wasn't
expecting this." He cleaned closer to the creature, a look of disgust
on his face.
Max shivered. "Fury things give me the creeps. The fur is always
covered in their own spit and teeming with parasites." He paused and
turned to look at Kylee. "Lieutenant, you did think to check this
thing for parasites, right?"
"Yes.. I checked it for parasites.. though it is highly unlikely to
find any on it.. since it survives out in the icy environment outside
the dome, and likely only because it was engineered that way," Kylee
said. "If you are so worried about fur, it's steadily losing it in
this warmer environment. How do you react around some of the.. hairier
races?" she asked, smirking slightly.
As he cleared his throat, Max straightened up and readjusted his
uniform. "Most sentient races practice good hygiene and don't get
parasites. They also don't still bathe themselves with their tongues."
Max shivered again as a chill went down his spine. "Wait... falling out?
What do you mean it's fur is falling out? Are you sure it isn't some
sort of sickness? Perhaps it's mangy?"
"It is perfectly healthy, I have been monitoring it. It is acting like
any creature in a warmer climate and losing it's heavier coat," Kylee
said. "And I know several sentient races that do not practice good
hygiene. This creature works with what it has. So, you only came done
here to insult the creature?" she asked.
Max shrugged, "That was not my intention, no. But I also wasn't
expecting it to be so repulsive. Oh, and I'm suppose to ask if you
need any special adjustments to the lab for your new... guest."
"One more comment and I'm holding you down and letting it crawl on
you," Kylee said, a hint of annoyance in her tone. "As for setting up
an environment for it yet.. that is still being determined. I am
testing how well it adapts to warm environments by slowly increasing
the temperature. Currently it is being held at a temperature of a
refrigeration unit. I already have temperature controlled labs set up
in the design."
Max shivered at the thought of the little fuzzball touching him. "Oh
it's adorable. Cutest thing I've ever laid eyes on. With all that
climate control your power consumption is likely to go up. I better
give the EPS feeds a close inspection. Once you have the plans
finalized I'm sure an engineering crew can have it put together for
you in no time."
Kylee stared at Max curiously. "Guessing you never had a pet.. You
seem wound a bit type, ensign," she said, smirking slightly. "As for
power.. you've not talked to Lox about another project I'm working on,
have you?" she asked.
Max shook his head, "All I know about is the garden and now this.
Commander Lox has not spoken to me about anything else. Why do you
ask?"
Kylee climbed to her feet, moving over to the main desk and grabbing
her PADD. She hit a few buttons, pulling up a rough schematic for the
wind turbines. "To help with power consumption.. placing them outside
the dome. Was thinking at least 3 of them," she said, offering the
PADD to Max.
Max looked the schematics over closely, "You design these?"
"The basic design.. no. I found old schematics from previous
functioning turbines. What I did was take in to account the increase
of wind on the structure, so made the base sturdier to withstand the
strain, and shortened the blades to not be ripped off as they spin.
Also worked on a possible design to improve efficiency of power
transfer."
"Actually, you could increase the size of the blade but adjust the
curvature..." He trailed off into silence, obviously lost in thought.
"Mind if I take a closer look at these?"
Kylee shrugged slightly, not really used to building such things.
"Sure, have at it. Was supposed to bring this to Ops once I was done,"
she said, her head tilting, watching him as he got lost in his
thoughts. "How much time do you spend working on these projects?"
"All my time..." He finally looked up and nodded, "I'll have these
ready for you soon, Lieutenant." And without waiting another word he
turned and left the science lab, lost in his latest project.
"You need to find something else to do, ensign," Kylee said, not
really one to talk, spending most of her time working. "Once you have
that done, let me know, so we can scout the area," she said as he
walked out.
