Jason took a moment to prepare himself after he found his room assignment on the base. Looking himself over in the mirror he smiled slight at the blue that designated him as medic and at his pips. Acting Lieutenant junior grade no bad, he thought to himself. He straightened his uniform and made sure he looked his best before leaving his quarters. This being his first assignment he wanted to make the best impression on his commanding officer. It didn't take him long to get to the Hospital, it was nicely marked on the outside like most hospitals are.
Jason gave his uniform one last tug before he stepped into the hospital, taking a few deep breathes. This was it, this was the moment he started to really be a doctor just had to step through that door. Which he did before people started to wondering why he was standing outside for so long. After passing through the entrance to where he would be working from now on, Jason looking around.
It must have been quite the surprise when stepping through the doors he found himself in a rather dingy looking lobby facing a harried young woman behind a high desk. A glance around showed the place to be a hospital, an old one in fact. The woman looked up as the door opened. “May I help you?”
Jason looked at the woman who spoke and smiles at her. "I hope so. I am looking for Doctor Blake... would you happen to know where she is?" he asked.
“And you are?” The woman pressed a com button and waited for Jason’s response.
Jason beamed a little, "Doctor Asburn."
The woman just raised an eyebrow. “Janet, is the doc in? She’s got a visitor…..A Doctor Asburn…..Yeh, he’s so new he squeaks when he walks……Sure, I’ll send him up.” She breaks off communications and regarded Jason once again. “Third floor, room 308. Don’t wander. You’re not authorized.”
Jason wanted to ask the woman if she realized he could hear her, he was standing near by and it wasn't like she is whispering. He also wanted to say something about the not authorized comment too but decided it was best not to say anything for now. He just nodded and headed for room 308 on the third floor.
Room 308 opened into a small office with a few iffy looking chairs, a patched sofa and desk behind which another woman sits. She looks up and smiles. “Doctor Asburn? I’m Janet Armand, Doctor Blake’s personal assistant.” She smiles warmly Jason. “Doctor Blake is waiting for you.” Janet stands and opens the door to the CMO’s personal office.
"Nice to meet you Janet," Jason said with a smile. He followed her to the door to the CMO's office and gave Janet a nod, "Thank you." He stepped into the office and gave it a quick look around as he stood at attention. "Doctor Asburn reporting for duty Ma'am."
For a moment, Jason didn’t see anyone, then a tall stack of PADDs were shifted to reveal a pixyish looking young woman with dark red hair and pointed ears sitting behind the desk. A smile came easily to a face used to smiles and laughter though currently she looked more tired than happy. “At ease, Doctor, and have a seat, please. I’m glad to have you join us. To say we’re short handed would be a major understatement. Sorry to say this assignment will be a busy one for you.”
Jason smiled a bit, "Well... didn't become a doctor for the light schedule and all the vacation time." He relaxed a bit, and looked around, "No offense but it seems that this hospital could use some patch work."
“That’s the least thing this place needs. Everything is outdated and just about falling apart. We have one medical replicator that I managed to commandeer from the Vimy before she left. Medical supply shipments are going..who knows where and Starfleet is generally hated by the populace who think we’re just bullyboys, though once some realized I meant what I said about health care being their right and payment is not expected, they warmed up a bit.” Cait sighed. “I’m sorry, we’re right in the middle of yet another crisis with no idea when it will end. Do you have a specialty, Doctor Asburn?”
Jason shook his head, "No specialty, general practice. I figured I shouldn't focus in one area, since didn't know what I would be facing wherever I was assigned," he told her. "Crisis? What's going on? Anything I can do to help?"
“A fresh out look might just be what we need.” Cait filled Jason in on the dreams people were having about alternate selves and the fact that some of the people from that universe were breaking through in body. She stopped a couple of times, hand going to her head and looking really pained. “Sorry, my counterpart is very much an evil bitch and she wants to take me over if she can. Now, Science and Engineering want to close the mine where these not-quite-antimatter thingies are coming from.” Yes, thingies WERE a real scientific term. “They want us to figure how to tell when no one’s having an incident.”
"I'm a bit confused... are they coming through some kind of portal or are they taking over people's bodies?" Jason asked. It all sounded a little out of this world to him and something straight out of a sci-fi holo-novel.
“It seems the ones actually transferring over here are people around our counterparts. My counterpart’s twin sister is here. I don’t have any siblings. In her universe, her Cait got the lion’s share of the Betazoid abilities and was also pushed. She’s quite strong now insane..brilliant, but insane and is actively trying to either draw me to her side of things or her to my side of things. I’m really not sure. My only advantage is the fact I was properly taught and my abilities have grown through hard work and necessity.”
"Well the only difference between insanity and brilliance is one has limits..." He sighed a bit as he looked around, trying to think of anything that might help. "First step I would think is to somehow stop the telepathic ability from being able to effect people, though I am sure you have already thought of that, and I really don't have any idea how that would work."
“Its not a broad event…I’m part Betazoid and so is my counterpart. That’s where the telepathy comes in. Keep it at the back of your mind. Never can tell what will rattle down eventually. I think I’d like you to work with Doctor Wilkinson until you get a feel for the place. Just remember that Medical can do a lot to help change the attitudes of the people and accordingly.”
Jason nodded a bit, and smiled slightly, "Follow Doctor Wilkinson and work on my bedside manner, I think I can handle that."
“Welcome to Paradise, Doctor.”
