Drake Gates starred at the ice planet from the comfort of the bridge
of his cargo ship. He was still awaiting news about his future with
the colony although he was told that information would be forthcoming
in a matter of hours. Already, he had had the occasion to explore the
colony and he liked what he saw. It was a place he could easily see
himself settling in. It had none of the glamour of the other
well-developed planets, and that was what seemed most appealing about
it.
News had reached him though of a rather strange occurrence on the
planet. Apparently, there was some sort of interdimensional bleed
between this universe and that of a parallel universe. Strangely, it
occurred only through dreams. Drake himself had not experienced the
parallel universe but he had heard others discuss that it was a
universe where humans were the dominant race and subjugated all other
races rather violently. He was naturally amused by such a universe,
but he was unwilling to experience it if he could help it. This was
largely because he had heard that the dreams led to personality
changes that had thus far resulted in violent acts cross the colony.
It was unclear at this point whether it was temporary or permanent.
Regardless, Drake had taken some preliminary cautions. He had chosen
to sleep on the Vallum Aelium, and had instructed the cargo ship's
Captain to break orbit and move a reasonably safe distance away from
the planet. It was unclear what "reasonably safe distance" meant, but
given that so far none of the over 50 crew members on the cargo ship
had experienced the strange dreams, they must be doing something
right.
Such development was bound to ruin business relationships but Drake
had no intention of leaving the colony. In fact, he surmised that this
development might actually play out in his favour. He knew the colony
desperately needed a consistent cargo service, and he was the only
service provider that had shown any real interest. If he played his
cards right, he might actually be able to gain some significant
concessions. His keen business mind was already devising a plan.
Moving to a vacant console on the small bridge, Drake took a seat and
began composing a message that he intended to send to the civilian
government. He intended to highlight his concern about the ongoing
situation, and how that was impact his decision to enter into a
business relationship with the colony. He of course had no intention
of leaving but he had the upper hand in this situation and he intended
to take advantage of it...
