The stars were aligning perfectly to his will, or so it seemed.
His contract with the local government had finally been approved.
There was very little doubt this would be the eventual outcome. Still,
it felt good to know that he was now in business with Paradise IV.
Unfortunately, the contract took effect immediately. Drake Enterprise
would have to step in almost immediately to begin transporting a batch
of mined goods that had thus far been stockpiled for lack of a steady
cargo transport. The official celebration of the contract signage
would have to wait until a later time.
For now the Vallum Aelium was getting ready to start loading the mined
goods. The modular cargo carrier now had all of her eight cargo pods
attached and ready to receive cargo. He didn't need need to be in one
of the cargo rooms to hear the near constant whine of the cargo
transports as batch after batch of cargo was beamed on board the ship.
In his mind's eye he could see the crew of the ship scurrying around
organizing and securing the cargo crates at the behest of the ship's
Captain.
Even the Bridge of the Vallum Aelium had a busy and tense atmosphere
about it. There were only five crew members on deck aside from Drake
and they were all intensely glaring at their respective consoles. No
doubt they were coordinating the transport of the cargo, boosting
power where required, updating and managing inventory information. It
was a pleasant sight to see. Drake was almost tempted to go on this
cargo run. He was already firmly seated in the Captain's Chair. He
would really be gone two weeks...three weeks max. That was not much
time in the grand scheme of things, and he would be out there among
the stars where he often longed to be.
But he had commitments here on Paradise IV, he quickly reminded
himself. Besides, his days of running cargo was long over. He could
only imagine what Nebu or Tara would say if they heard him doing
another cargo run. He suspected his business partners would have
another meeting in which they would proceed to chide him about his
inappropriate conduct as head of Drake Enterprise. A grin traced his
lips at that thought.
Drake pushed himself up from the seat. It was time for him to take his
leave. The Vallum Aelium will be departing within the next five hours
and Drake had a date in two hours. He looked to his right where the
cargo Captain presently sat. "The ship's all yours Steven. Don't wreck
her."
"Can't promise that but you know I always deliver my best," Steven
replied back with a grin.
"Smart ass," Drake muttered before the turbolift doors sealed shut and
started its rapid descent to the small cargo bay where his shuttle was
waiting for him.
A few minutes later, Drake was inside Betty heading towards Paradise...
<<Point of clarification on the last line Betty is the name of Drake's
shuttle, and I put the line there on purpose :p>>
